South Africa's Tim Clark used an ace on his final hole to Friday to make a quantum leap up the leaderboard during the second round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

An ace came in handy for Tim Clark on Friday.

Not only did the man who started the day in a tie for 73rd assure himself of making the cut, Clark moved into contention at the midway point of the $6.2 million PGA TOUR event.

Clark fired the day's best round of 66 to finish the first 36 holes in a tie for sixth at 5-under 139, three strokes off the pace set by Briny Baird.

The former N.C. State golfer started on the back nine and made three straight birdies beginning at No. 11. He responded to his only bogey of the day at the sixth hole by playing his next three in 4 under, including the ace at No. 9.

Justin Bolli and J.J. Henry were each on the outside looking in, too, tied for 92nd after opening with matching rounds of 74. Each shot 68 on Friday to make the move to 2 under for the tournament and into a tie for 32nd.

James Driscoll was in even more dire circumstances at the end of 18 holes, tied for 112th after opening with a 75. His round of 67 on Friday, though, enabled him to stick around for the weekend and join Bolli and Henry, among others, at 2 under.

Tom Pernice Jr. survived a triple bogey on the 17th hole to make the cut on the number. He made birdies on the seventh and eighth holes, his 16th and 17th of the day, to shoot 1 under and finish in a tie with 18 others at even-par 144.

Also making the cut on the number was Jonathan Kaye, who birdied the 18th hole for a round of 70 on Friday

Among the notables missing the cut were former British Open champion David Duval, Davis Love III, John Daly and former Masters winner Mike Weir.
