Toshiba Classic: Second-Round Notebook

Mar. 10, 2007

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- Jay Haas, the leader after two rounds of the Toshiba Classic, has won two of the three events when he has led or shared the lead after 36 holes. His wins came at the 2006 Administaff Small Business Classic, when rain forced cancellation of the final round, and at the 2006 Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf. He finished second last month at the Allianz Championship in the only other event he was in that position.

• Haas is T55 in Driving Accuracy (16/28/57.1%) and T19 in Greens in Regulation through two rounds, but shares the lead in fewest putts (51) with second-place Peter Jacobsen and Joe Ozaki.

• Haas' 13-under-par total of 129 tied the Toshiba Classic 36-hole record set in 2003 by Rodger Davis, who went on to win the tournament. Haas remains bogey-free after 36 holes, the only player in the field to have accomplished that.

• Haas will take over the lead in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup race with a victory on Sunday. Loren Roberts leads with 418 points, followed by Haas, the 2006 Charles Schwab Cup winner, with 353 points. The winner will earn 248 points.

• In the previous 12 tournaments, six players who have led or been tied for the lead after 36 holes have gone on to win this event, including five times in the last seven years. The exceptions were in 2006, when Brad Bryant came from three strokes back to win, and in 2001, when Jose Maria Canizares made up a five-stroke deficit to 36-hole leader Terry Mauney to defeat Gil Morgan in a nine-hole playoff.

• One tournament oddity is that in the previous 12 events, only twice has there been co-leaders after 36 holes (2004 -- Tom Purtzer and Morris Hatalsky; 2006 -- Purtzer, Bob Eastwood and Graham Marsh).

• Loren Roberts moved within one of tying Larry Nelson's record for consecutive rounds par/better on the Champions Tour of 32. Roberts fired a 2-under-par 69, which gave him 31 straight rounds par/better, including 29 rounds under par. Roberts' string began last September at the Wal-Mart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.

• One day after 43 players in the 78-man field finished with rounds under par, that number grew to 54 on Saturday and the field averaged 69.724, a drop from Friday's average of 70.154.

• It's been a good week for open qualifiers this week. Joe Ozaki (T4) and Rick Karbowski (T6) are currently in the top 10. Should they remain there, they would earn spots in next week's AT&T Champions Classic at Valencia Country Club in Valencia, Calif. Ozaki's 7-under-par 64 was his low round on the Champions Tour.

Chris Starkjohann, another open qualifier, had 13 one-putts on Saturday on his way to a 3-under-par 68.

Dave Stockton made a nice recovery from Friday's 4-over-par 75. Stockton followed with 6-under-par 65, a 10-shot swing and matched his age in the process for the first time in his career. It was also his best round since shooting a 64 in the final round of the 2002 Napa Valley Championship.

Scott Hoch, John Jacobs and Wayne Levi all made the day's biggest moves, jumping from T35 to T13.
