Deutsche Bank cut knocks 20 more players out of Playoffs

Sep. 2, 2007

NORTON, Mass. -- Twenty more players ended their run in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup on Saturday.

Of that total, 15 missed the cut at the Deutsche Bank Championship, three withdrew and two others opted not to play in the first place. All were ranked from No. 71 to 120 in the FedExCup standings and only the top 70 advance to next week's BMW Championship.

Two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen and former PGA champs Davis Love III and Shaun Micheel were among the players making an early exit at the TPC Boston.

Also missing the cut were Tim Petrovic, J.J. Henry, Chris DiMarco, Tim Herron, Ted Purdy, Kevin Stadler, Bob Estes, Jeff Overton, J.B. Holmes, D.J. Trahan, Harrison Frazar and local favorite Brett Quigley.

Players who rank 40th and above in the FedExCup standings at the start of the week are a lock to advance to the third Playoff event at Cog Hill while those from 41st to 64th would fall into the "probable" category.

From 64th through 77th on the points list, only one player (Peter Lonard) missed the cut, and two withdrew or didn't play (Fred Funk and Stephen Leaney). Therefore, there is a lot of potential volatility in who will make it into the BMW Championship field.

As of the end of the second round, three players had moved from outside the "elimination" line to inside it - Rich Beem (again!), Mike Weir and Bo Van Pelt, dropping Rocco Mediate, Peter Lonard and Steve Flesch out. In all likelihood, about three to five players will drop out, but it could be any of the ones listed below.

The following people are "on the bubble," but based on their play so far would land safely inside the Top 70:

On the bubble
Name Current FEC Rank Finish needed to advance* Current position in the field
Mike Weir 88 5 T1
Sean O'Hair 68 39 T4
Arron Oberholser 67 43 T8
Bo Van Pelt 72 30 T17
*Finish (or better) needed to advance regardless of what other players do.

The following people are "on the bubble," and are currently very close (either above or below) the position they need to advance:
