AKRON, Ohio -- Mike Weir withdrew from the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational on Friday due to a muscle spasm in his neck. Weir had played 11 holes of his second round at Firestone Country Club.

Weir first felt a twinge when he hit a shot from the rough at the fourth hole. Two more shots from the tall grass at the ninth and 10th holes sealed his fate, so Weir decided to withdraw rather than risk not being at full strength for next week's PGA Championship.

"Basically, it's a muscle spasm, everything in there from my neck right down there into my upper thoracic area is just swollen right up," Weir said.

Weir has had issues with his neck in the past. He says it's normally a few days before he can swing again, so he plans to go home to Utah and see his chiropractor. If all goes well, Weir said he'll likely fly to Tulsa on Monday afternoon.

"It's usually a couple days until I can swing," Weir said. "You've got to do pretty much nothing. You've got to just (take) Advil, ice it. (The therapist) said tomorrow it'll probably be really stiff when I wake up, which is kind of what I remember it being, and then it will kind of work its course of not doing anything.

"You've got to let it settle down. Everything has just spasmed up. ... You can't try to stretch it, you can't do anything. You've just got to let the inflammation settle down."

Weir is the second player to withdraw this week. Jim Furyk, the No. 2-ranked player in the world, aggravated an injury to his upper back and ribs on Tuesday and opted out of the Bridgestone Invitational prior to starting his first round.
