PODS Championship: Second-round notes

Mar. 9, 2007

• The cut came at 2-over 144 with 77 players advancing to the weekend. It is just the second time this season that the cut has been over-par. Last week the cut at the Honda Classic was 4-over 144.

• In the seven year history of the PODS Championship, three players have posted four rounds in the 60s in the same week -- Vijay Singh and Jesper Parnevik in 2004 and K.J. Choi in 2002. Through two rounds only three players can go on to post four rounds in the 60s this week at the Copperhead Course -- Stephen Leaney (69-67), Heath Slocum (68-69) and K.J. Choi (69-69).

• Only Woody Austin (+1) has a perfect cut record (7-for-7) at the PODS Championship event. A total of nine players have participated in all seven PODS Championship. (Billy Andrade, Austin, K.J. Choi, Robert Gamez, Brian Gay, Tim Herron, John Huston, Lee Janzen and Billy Mayfair).

• Five of the six previous winners of the PODS Championship have been international players, including the last five. After American John Huston won the inaugural event in 2000, and the 2001 tournament was cancelled due to the events of 9/11, South Korea's K.J. Choi won in 2002 and 2006, followed by South Africa's Retief Goosen, Vijay Singh of Fiji and Carl Pettersson of Sweden in 2005. Through 36-holes there are only three players in the top-10 with international ties -- Stephen Leaney (1), K.J. Choi (T3) and Daniel Chopra (T3).

• The PODS Championship has three of the top-5 and six of the top-10 players in the FedExCup Points standings in the field. All six players in the top-10 on the FedExCup made the 36-hole cut at the Copperhead course: No. 1 Charles Howell III (+2), No. 3 Vijay Singh (-2), No. 4 John Rollins (E), No. 7 Mark Wilson (-2), No. 9 Paul Goydos (-2) and No. 10 Charley Hoffman (-1).

The PODS Championship field has six of the 10 winners on TOUR so far this year -- Vijay Singh (-2), Paul Goydos (-2), Charley Hoffman (-1), Charles Howell III (+2), Fred Funk (WD) and Mark Wilson (-2). Funk, who opened with a 1-under 70, was the only player to miss the weekend. He withdrew due after seven holes on Friday to a back injury.

• Of the 13 majors winners in the PODS Championship field Vijay Singh (-2/ T14), Mark Calcavecchia (E/T38), Rich Beem (E/T37), Shaun Micheel (+1/T53) and Tom Lehman (E/T37) made the 36-hole cut

• Mark Calcavecchia, Stephen Leaney and Kirk Triplett shared the low round of the day honors on Friday with 4-under 67s.

• Leader Stephen Leaney is making his third career start in this event. He has never missed the cut in his three previous starts at Innisbrook.

• Stephen Leaney's 6-under-par 136 was good for a one-shot lead over Heath Slocum. This is the first time in his career that Leaney has held/shared the second-round lead on the PGA TOUR. In fact, this is the first time Leaney has held a lead after any round during his TOUR career, which now totals 105 starts.

• Defending champion K. J. Choi posted 3-under 69 on Friday and sits two-strokes back of leader Stephen Leaney. Choi, a winner here in 2002 and 2006, is the only multiple winner of the event.

• Bogey-free rounds for the week:Thursday (2) -- Ryan Armour and John Senden; Friday -- none.

John Daly withdrew after nine holes on Friday due to shoulder injury.

• Fred Funk withdrew during the round (seven holes) on Friday due to a back injury.

Craig Barlow withdrew before his round due to a injured wrist.

• Mark Calcavecchia needed only 23 putts on Friday to get around the Copperhead Course.
