CA Championship: Second-Round Notebook PGA TOUR Staff MIAMI -- Friday's weather: Partly cloudy and breezy with an afternoon high in the lower 80s. Winds out of the E/NE at 15 -25 mph. There were a few spotty showers late in the afternoon during the secnd round of the world Golf Championships-CA Championship. ![]() Tiger Woods has won 32 of the 36 events in which he has held or shared the lead after two rounds. The par-4 closing hole at the Blue Monster has only given up four birdies for the week. In fact it is playing +.733 strokes over par, making it the toughest hole for the season. Only seven players managed to hit the green in regulation on Friday, while there were 15 players who hit the green in regulation on Thursday. Geoff Ogilvy is the only player who has hit No. 18 green in regulation both days. Tiger Woods has held 32 previous 36-hole leads/co-leads on the PGA TOUR, winning on 26 of those occasions. The last time he did not win after leading through 36 holes was at the 2004 EDS Byron Nelson Championship. He had a 1-stroke leave over Mark O'Meara and went on to finish T4. Tiger Woods posted the low round of the day with his 6-under 66. The last time Woods held a 36-hole lead on the PGA TOUR was last year, when he had a five-stroke lead over Jim Furyk at the 2006 CA Championship. In fact, it marks he fourth time he has held the 36-hole lead a the CA Championship. The last three times he has gone on to win the event. Last year at Doral, the 36-hole cut for the Ford Championship at Doral was 4-under 140. Through two rounds, with 73 of the top players in the world playing this week at the CA Championship, there are only nine players at 4 under par or better. They are (-7) Tiger Woods (-5) Rod Pampling and (-4) Thomas Bjorn, Zach Johnson, Charles Howell III, Ernie Els, Henrik Stenson, Trevor Immelman and Aaron Baddeley. The Blue Monster played 1.287 stokes easier on Friday, with the field averaging 72.110, compared to the Thursday average of 73.397. The difference really came on the front nine. On Thursday the front-nine averaged 36.658 compared to 35.658 for Friday, a difference of exactly one stroke. Rod Pampling, who sits alone in second, is one of six international players inside the top-5 on the leaderboard. Pampling's last TOUR title came at the 2006 Bay Hill Invitational. When the PGA TOUR moves to Florida each year, players with ties to the state seem to thrive. There are five players in the top-10 who have ties to the state of Florida -- Tiger Woods (1), Zach Johnson (T3), Charles Howell III (T3), Trevor Immelman (T3) and Ernie Els (T3). Since the start of the 2000 season, the PGA TOUR has played 44 official events in the state. Of those 44, more than half (23), have been won by players with Florida ties, including the last two weeks with victories by Mark Calcavecchia (PODS Championship) and Vijay Singh (Arnold Palmer Invitational). While this week's World Golf Championships-CA Championship is not the same event as the old TOUR stop at Doral Golf Resort and Spa, it is interesting to note that the last seven winners of the tournament held here have had Florida ties. Included among those seven winners are Jim Furyk, Joe Durant, Els and Woods -- all competing this week at the CA Championship.
Only four players have made birdie in the 18th hole this week. They are Phil Mickelson (12'7" birdie putt in Round 1), Sergio Garcia (4'9" birdie putt in Round 1), Carl Pettersson 40' 10" chip in Round 2) and Charl Schwartzel (43' 9" putt in Round 2). There were a total of four eagles made on Friday, bringing the weekly total to eight. They have come on the par-5 first hole (Ernie Els, Round 1; Paul Casey, Round 1; Sergio Garcia, Round 1; Paul Broadhurst, Round 1; Johan Edfors, Round 2; Stewart Cink, Round 2); the par-4 11th hole (Prom Meesawat, Round 2); and the par-4 sixth hole (Rod Pampling, Round 2). There were only two bogey-free rounds recorded on Friday, from Tiger Woods and Trevor Immelman. No player managed to post a bogey-free round on Thursday. Copyright 2007 PGATOUR.com.
