| Calcavecchia earns CA Championship berth DORAL, Fla. -- With his win at last week's PODS Championship, Mark Calcavecchia not only earned his 13th PGA TOUR tournament title and first since 2005, he also collected 4,500 FedExCup points to move from 34th to fifth in the standings, meaning the 27-year TOUR veteran secures a place in the March 19-25 World Golf Championships-CA Championship field. The CA Championship's eligibility requirements were tweaked this year to include top performers from the PGA TOUR's first-ever season long competition, the FedExCup. The top-10 players from the PGA TOUR FedExCup Points List as of March 12 earned a spot in the field -- and Calcavecchia was the only player to make a big enough move to qualify. ![]() Mark Calcavecchia will be playing at Doral thanks to his PODS Championship win. (Messerschmidt/WireImage) While 75 players can pack their bags for Doral Golf Resort & Spa, Doral, Fla., the field won't be finalized until the conclusion of this week's Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard. On March 19, any player who enters the top 10 on the FedExCup Points List will be eligible for the CA Championship, as well as any player who cracks the Official World Golf Ranking's top 50 or the top 10 on the European Tour Order of Merit. That means Heath Slocum, a runner-up with John Senden at last week's PODS Championship, still has a chance to continue the PGA TOUR's Florida Swing. Slocum, currently 12th in FedExCup Points, needs to finish 17th or better this week to have a chance at cracking the top 10. For Jeff Quinney (13th with 4,467 points), a 14th-or-better showing is needed. And Senden is almost-but-not-quite qualified in both of the still-open categories. He's currently 52nd in the Official World Golf Rankings and would need to finish seventh or better this week for a chance to move into the top 50. Additionally, Senden is 22th in FedExCup Points (1,713), so only a second consecutive runner-up would move him into the top 10. Regardless, with only a week remaining until final qualification deadline for this year's World Golf Championships-CA Championship, fans can already count on watching some of the game's most celebrated players square off against many of golf's up and coming stars at the Blue Monster Course at Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Doral, Florida, on March 19-25. Seventy-four of the world's best players from 18 different countries have qualified for the CA Championship, including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Ernie Els. Limited hospitality opportunities remain for the 2007 CA Championship. Please contact the CA Championship office at 305-513-4653, extension 102 to inquire. There are two ways to order tickets to the 2007 CA Championship: For information on other ticket specials, log on to www.worldgolfchampionships.com and look for the ticket information section of the World Golf Championships-CA Championship web-site. The 2007 World Golf Championships-CA Championship will have an $8 million purse, with the game's top players competing for the $1.35 million first-place prize and the Gene Sarazen Cup. The event is also a part of the PGA TOUR's new FedExCup, the season-long competition where PGA TOUR member players will amass points based on their performance. One of three World Golf Championships events, the CA Championship will feature the top-50 players from the Official World Golf Ranking along with top finishers on the money lists of the six Tours comprising the International Federation of PGA Tours (PGA TOUR, European Tour, Australasian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Asian Tour and Sunshine Tour). The first two rounds will be televised by The Golf Channel and NBC will broadcast the final two rounds. The tournament will be televised in 140 countries. Some of golf's best players have emerged victorious during the tournament's seven-year history. Tiger Woods counts five victories in this tournament among his 13 World Golf Championships titles. He won the inaugural event in 1999 at Valderrama in Spain and followed that up with victories in 2002 in Ireland, in 2003 and 2005 in the United States. Earlier this year, he was victorious in London. In 2000, Canadian Mike Weir captured the title, and in 2004, Ernie Els of South Africa triumphed. The World Golf Championships feature elite players in a variety of competitive formats at venues around the world. Since the series debut in 1999, World Golf Championships have been held in 10 countries. The CA Championship has been played five times in Europe and twice previously in the United States. |
