WORLD GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS | Accenture Match Play: Second-Round Notebook PGA TOUR Staff MARANA, Ariz. -- With his second-round victory over two-time Masters Champion Jose Maria Olazabal in the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship Thursday, Geoff Ogilvy has now won eight consecutive matches. He has won more matches without a loss to begin his Accenture Match Play career than any other player. Ogilvy is now 8-0 in the event. Jeff Maggert went 6-0 to win the inaugural Accenture Match Play in 1999, and Andrew Magee went 5-0 in 1999 before losing to Maggert in the finals. Pierre Fulke went 5-0 before losing in his debut in 2001, while Scott McCarron went 5-0 before losing in his debut in 2002.
The most consecutive matches won in Accenture Match Play Championship history is 13 by Tiger Woods (2003-05). Woods' streak of 13 consecutive victories ended with his 3 & 1 loss to Nick O'Hern in the second round in 2005. David Toms won his first two matches in 2006 to extend his streak to eight consecutive wins before falling to Tom Lehman, 4 & 3 in the third round. Geoff Ogilvy ties Toms with his second round victory on Thursday. Eleven of the 16 remaining players in the field have Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup experience. Aaron Baddeley, Shaun Micheel, Stephen Ames, Justin Rose and Geoff Ogilvy are the three without match-play experience at those two events. With his victory on Wednesday, Tiger Woods ran his career Accenture Match Play Championship record to 25-5 and has won 16 of his last 18 matches. Aaron Baddeley, who defeated Luke Donald 1-up in the second round, is the lone first-time Accenture Match Play Championship participant still alive among the original nine. Baddeley is one of eight Australians that started the week. Tiger Woods is the only No. 1 seeds remaining in the 16 player field. Phil Mickelson lost to Justin Rose 3 & 1 and Jim Furyk lost to Chad Campbell in 19 holes. Stephen Ames' victory over Vijay Singh (19 holes) and Chad Campbell's win over Jim Furyk (19 holes) were the only matches to go extra holes on Thursday. Nick O'Hern is the lone left-handed participant still alive. A total of 10 of the 22 international players who won their first-round matches went on to win in the second round, while six of the 10 Americans who won their first-round matches went on to win in the second round.
