More than one champ to be crowned at Grayhawk PGA TOUR Staff SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Missing the cut this week translated into just two rounds on the Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club. Make the cut, though, and you're teeing it up for four rounds. But if you make the cut and happen to be Ted Purdy, well, then, you're sticking around for five rounds, spilling over into Monday morning. ![]() Ted Purdy. (Ehrmann/WireImage) On Monday morning after the Fry's Electronics Open champion is crowned, another winner will emerge -- charity. For the third year, Purdy will host the Pebble Tec Charity Tournament at Grayhawk. The event is open to the public and Purdy encourages anyone who might be in the area to come join the field. All proceeds from the event benefit A Stepping Stone, which is a literacy program geared towards 4-year-old, poverty-level Hispanic children and their families. "We educate the child with a mandatory involvement from the mother or father," Purdy said. "We educate the parent, as well as provide them with parenting skills. We then give them an ESL degree and a GED." It all culminates at the end of the year with a graduation ceremony and a packed gymnasium. "We have parents, grandparents, and all the siblings," Purdy said. "Everybody is dressed in their Sunday best." With such a growing demand for A Stepping Stone, a waiting list is in place each year. Like getting into college, directors selectively pick the most qualified people. In this case, qualified is in regard to those that are most in need, most at risk. A Stepping Stone is a non-profit organization tied into the public school system in South Phoenix. The Foundation's budget for the year is $500,000. Last year, this one-day golf outing raised more than $100,000. Purdy remains hopeful that number will grow each year. "This is usually the highest education that anybody in these families," he stressed. "It really picks up the parent and really gets these kids off to a good start."
