Weekley blog: The putts didn't drop at the right time

Nov. 25, 2007

Editor's note: Boo Weekley teamed with his good friend Heath Slocum to represent the United States at the OMEGA Mission Hills World Cup in China. The pair finished second after losing in a playoff to the Scottish team of Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren.

SHENZEN, China -- It was a great week. It is an honor to be able to come over here and represent your country and play this tournament. We weren't even supposed to be here so that's a bonus.

To be able to come over here and see this great country and meet these wonderful people and play in a great event like this was really something special. I know we feel kind of disappointed of how we finished up, but overall, it was a great week.

We left a couple shots out there today. At the same time we had difficult putts. It wasn't like they were just straight up the hill right at it. Heath made the clutch putt on 18 for us to get into a playoff, and that's what it's about.

We come out here to learn how to control ourselves, our energy, on the golf course, or for me it is, anyway. And it was fun. He made that putt. It was nerve wracking, because I know how I would have felt on that last putt right there. We had some chances to win, but we just come up short there at the end.

Our strategy was the same today as it was during the second round on Friday. I was going to tee off on the par 5s and give him the chance because I hit it just a little further than he does. I wanted to be able to give him an iron or at least a 3-iron into the greens.

We took advantage of a couple of them and a couple of them we just struggled on. We knew we were going to have to make some birdies if we were going to have a chance to win.

But it all goes back to putting in this format. You've got to hit the shots but at the same time you've got to make the putts. I left him some tough putts out there. Heath didn't putt like I know how he can. He was all around the cup all week but couldn't get them to drop. He was due to make more than he did.

I didn't really get to experience a whole lot of China except the resort, and it's unreal. All of the people here are so nice. They don't quite understand the game yet, I don't think, or the rules of how quiet it should be, which is about like every golf tournament you go to, but they'll learn.

They were catching on more and more as the week went on. This is going to be a good venue for the next couple of years to have it here, and I hope that the U.S. would love to have me and Heath back again to represent it.

It was an honor to represent the United States and our families and friends this week.
