Weekley blog: Boo on the first round in China

Nov. 22, 2007

Editor's note: Boo Weekley is teaming with his good friend, Heath Slocum to represent the United States at the OMEGA Mission Hills World Cup in China. He'll be writing a diary each day for PGATOUR.com and this is his third installment.

SHENZEN, China -- My caddie Joe was stuck in Hong Kong on Tuesday because he didn't have a visa. It was aggravating for both of us. It was more aggravating for him because he wanted to come over here with us. He got things straightened out, though, and he finally showed up Wednesday afternoon around 4 over here at Mission Hills. He got in to his round, and he and D.J., Heath's caddie, hung out for a little while. When we got back from doing the opening ceremony, I figured they would be in there talking and cutting up. No, he's in there sleeping. He fell asleep yesterday at 6 o'clock and woke up this morning I think at about 4. So he slept almost 24 hours. But I'm glad to have him back. He's my little buddy.

I was pretty much acclimated when we got here. I slept enough on that airplane for everybody. I got on that airplane and I was out -- yes, sir. At night we've been going down to the restaurant and then going back to the room and watching the three channels that we've got on our TV that we can understand. HBO is one of them and Hallmark and ESPN are the others. We're having a really good time here. The people are wonderful and friendly. It sure is nice being so far from home and being around such nice people. It makes it easier for us all.

We played the pro-am yesterday with a couple of businessmen from China. I think both of them were from Beijing. One of the guys was named Eddie. He was great. He had a real good sense of humor. We cut up a little bit, and we'd laugh and he'd laugh. Some of it was pretty comical. His English was pretty decent. If we didn't talk too fast, he could understand us. But we couldn't understand some of the stuff he was trying to say. He got to talking pretty fast and we didn't understand a word of it. But we had a good time. Heath had been around the course one time already and I was just looking at different little places to hit it. Joe wasn't here yet, so D.J. was caddying for both of us in the pro-am. We were just trying to get the actual landing areas where we wanted to land the ball. There's a couple of tee shots you have to land it in just the right spot -- if not, you'll run it in the bunker. We kind of covered that base yesterday, though, so we were more than ready for the tournament to start.

We tag-teamed it pretty good today in the first round. We played real solid, both of us. We both hit some squirrely shots, but we leaned on each other, and that's what it's about. It's awesome to be able to come over here, so far away from home, and represent the U.S. I think we both hit the ball fairly straight off the tee and that's a plus for us. We both know each other's game -- what yardage we're going to hit -- as long as the wind isn't switching around on us. And with these hills, you're supposed to think the wind is coming out of the northeast, and next thing you know you're standing on the tee box and it's blowing dead on your face, coming straight out of the south, and you're going, "How in the world is it doing this?" But we played solid today, and we kind of know exactly where we want to go with this. We play alternate shot in the second round. What we're going to do tonight is sit down and talk about who is going to lead this off -- when we go to the first hole, if I'm going to do it or he's going to do it. Odd or even, we're going to find out. It should be fun.
