The Fantasy Insider: The TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola

Sep. 11, 2007

Wow, that went by quickly.

Seems like about three weeks ago that The Fantasy Insider was thinking about the Mercedes-Benz Championship and roping together everyone in the Expert League for an online chat session during the draft.

Now it's the last column of the season, coinciding with THE TOUR Championship and leading into an almost four-month (and most comfy) break from fantasy golf.

TFI will miss you.

It hasn't been the best of seasons for your columnist. He struggled through the match-play format in Public League 3,359 thanks in large part to the poor play of Vijay Singh, who remained on the no-cut list despite a crummy second half of the season.

(And profuse thanks to the other seven team owners in Public League 3359, who put up being the subjects of TFI's weekly match recaps. Enjoy the offseason, everyone.)

Then TFI fumbled a clear lead during the last month of the Expert League, finishing second by 5 points to Christian Peterson of fanball.com, the organization that runs all the fantasy games for the PGA TOUR.

Finally, it was brought to TFI's attention Monday morning that he's been misreading the schedule all season and the League Championship season actually ended last week. And all this time he thought The TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola would give him one last chance at redemption.

Guess it's time to spend a few months of Monday nights sitting on the sofa, eating bonbons and watching TiVo of Oprah shows.

In the end, despite all the trials and tribulations, it's difficult to say with a straight face that fantasy golf is a frustration that can't be stomached.

You may have finished rock-bottom last in your League Championship league (and one in eight of us can make that claim).

You may have finished outside the top 35,000 in Salary Cap Cup for a week, a segment or the overall season (and there are several thousand of us who can make that claim, too).

But even if we couldn't pick a tournament winner with our eyes shut, each week we had a period of time when all the life's other troubles melted away and we enjoyed the possibilities of that week's tournament.

So we go into the final week of Salary Cap Cup with at least that smile on our faces.

Rotisserie results for Expert League at BMW Championship: 41.0 points (sixth, 22.5 points behind T.J. Auclair). Second in putting and birdies, third in sand saves; dead last in greens, scrambling and stroke average. Overall: 61.0 points (second, 5.0 behind Christian Peterson). Hey, at least TFI spent a good part of the season in first place, even if he was run over by the Peterson steamroller.
