Las Vegas resident Bob May is playing in just his 13th event of 2007, having missed more than three months (February-May) due to a back injury suffered riding a stationary bicycle. May is No. 217 on the PGA TOUR Official Money List but will be granted a Medical Exemption for 2008 if he is unable to earn top 125 status due to time missed due to injury. Co-leader Jason Gore (TC) led the field with 10 birdies on Thursday and finished at 8-under-par 63 at the par-71 TPC The Canyons. Co-leader Bob May is looking for his first PGA TOUR victory. There have been six players to earn their maiden PGA TOUR victory in Las Vegas: 1995, Jim Furyk; 1996, Tiger Woods; 2002, Phil Tataurangi; 2004, Andre Stoltz; 2005, Wes Short, Jr.; and 2006, Troy Matteson. Bill Haas (SM) posted three eagles on Thursday on Nos. 3, 9 and 13 en route to a 5-under-par 67. On his fourth par 5 of the day, he had to settle for birdie as he two-putted from 29 feet on the par-5 16th. Haas is the second player on TOUR in 2007 to record three eagles in a round -- Hunter Mahan accomplished the feat in the first round of the Canadian Open. Last year, the eagles leader for the week was J.B. Holmes with four. Chad Campbell and Bob May added two eagles each on Thursday. Despite the two eagles, Campbell (TC) posted a 4-over-par 76 and sits 144th through 18 holes. Bill Haas (SM) has enjoyed the PGA TOUR Fall Series thus far. In two starts, he has two top-10s (tied for 10th at Turning Stone resort Championship; tied for third at the Viking Classic) and has jumped from No. 125 to No. 99 on the PGA TOUR Official Money List. The top 125 players on the season-ending money list earn exempt status for the 2008 season. Steve Lowery (SM) led the field in Greens in Regulation in the first round as he was perfect -- hitting 18-of-18 greens on Thursday. Lowery finished at 6-under-par 66. Andres Gonzales (TC) was perfect in Driving Accuracy, hitting 14-of-14. Former UNLV All-America Charley Hoffman (SM) leads the pack of former Rebel golfers after posting a 5-under-par 67. Other former UNLV players in the field include: Chad Campbell, Chris Riley, Andres Gonzales, Ryan Moore and Bill Lunde. Hoffman is currently 44th on the PGA TOUR Money List and looks to jump inside the top-30 over the final four events, ensuring a bid to the 2008 Masters Tournament. In the previous 24 Frys.Com Open tournaments, the leader/co-leader after the first round has gone on to win just three times. Fuzzy Zoeller performed the feat in the inaugural tournament in 1983 and was followed by Bill Glasson in 1997 and Stuart Appleby in 2003. Mark Brooks is competing in a tournament-record 24th consecutive Frys.Com Open. He missed the inaugural tournament in 1983, but has played every year since to hold the record for most tournament appearances. Just three of the 15 players in the current top-10 played Thursday's first round at TPC The Canyons: Jason Gore (63/tied for first), Rich Beem (64/tied for third) and Marco Dawson (65/tied for seventh). The scoring average at TPC Summerlin on Thursday was 69.250 (par 72) vs. 69.000 (par-71) at TPC The Canyons. A total of 109 of the 144 players posted scores under-par, with 124 players recording rounds of par or better. Defending champion Troy Matteson (SM) recovered from bogeys on each of his first two holes to post a 3-under-par 69. |
