Jesper Parnevik is looking for his first TOUR title since the 2001 Honda Classic, over six and half years and 170 starts. Since his last win he has collected three runner-up finishes and 17 top-10s. Along with leader Jesper Parnevik there are five Swedish players in the top-10, although Parnevik is the only TOUR winner out of the five players. With his 61-65 starts, Parnevik now has the low opening 36-hole score in Valero Texas Open tournament history. Further, his 126-total over the first 36 holes is the lowest on TOUR this season. Jesper Parnevik's 126 total is one shy of the PGA TOUR record of 125 recorded by four players. He joins a group of 10 players in the history of the TOUR that have posted a 126 total. Parnevik is 2-4 overall when leading after 36 holes. His wins came at the 1999 Wyndham Championship and the 2001 Honda Classic. Six of the eight past champions in the field this week at the Valero Texas Open managed to make the cut. Two-time winner of the Valero Texas Open, Justin Leonard is an 8-under 132 and leads the group of winners. The four-stroke lead for Jesper Parnevik is the largest 36-hole lead on TOUR this year. Brandt Snedeker (Buick Invitational), Jeff Quinney (FBR Open), Rocco Mediate (Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard), Ernie Els (Verizon Heritage) and Tiger Woods (THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola) each had a three stroke lead after 36-holes. Woods was the only player to go on to win after holding the three-stroke lead through 36-holes. Only 10 players were bogey-free on Friday. They were: Mathais Gronberg (65), Fredrik Jacobson (65), Justin Leonard (67), Heath Slocum (65), Chris Stroud (65), Jeff Gove (66), Doug Labelle (68), Bo van Pelt (67), Garrett Willis (68) and Anthony Kim (65). Mark Hensby withdrew prior to the second round. |
