Buick Open: Second-Round Notebook PGA TOUR staff The 36-hole cut came at 3-under-par 141 with 77 players making it to the weekend. This marks the second straight year that Brett Quigley has been the leader/co-leader through 36 holes at the Buick Open. Quigley opened with 65-66--131 last year before finishing in a tie for seventh. ![]() Jim Furyk is looking for his second win at the Buick Open. (WireImage)
The last player to hold at least a share of the 36-hole lead at the same event for two straight years was Stuart Appleby at the Shell Houston Open in 2006 and 2007. Kenny Perry's second-round 63 is two shots off the second-round record at the Buick Open set by Tiger Woods in 2005 (61). His 63 is also one shot off his career-low second round, which he set at the 1995 Nissan Open (62). Perry's round was due in large part to his success on the greens. The 2001 Buick Open champion one-putted his first eight holes and wound up with 22 putts on the day. Through two rounds, Perry is the only player in the field with two eagles (Round One: Par-4 4th; Round Two: Par-5 7th). Jim Furyk's opening rounds of 66-68--134 extend his current streak of rounds in the 60s at the Buick Open to eight. This ties the tournament record which Furyk shares with Tiger Woods. Today's round of 68 also extends Furyk's streak of rounds below par at Warwick Hill to 35. Ten-under 134 is the highest score to lead at the Buick Open after 36 holes since 1992 when David Frost had the halfway lead with rounds of 67-67--134 (10-under par). Brian Bateman's second-round 70 is the fourth round of 70 he has carded in his last six rounds at the Buick Open (2006: 70-70-72-70--282). With only four cuts made this year, Bateman may have found the missing link in his game. The former LSU star's Putting Average is 1.630 through two rounds, which is .200 beneath his 2007 PGA TOUR Average of 1.830 (T159). The only other time in Bateman's career that he found himself in the top-10 after 36 holes was at the 2005 BellSouth Classic where he was tie for fourth before eventually finishing tied for 15th for the week. Jim Furyk (66-68--134), Kenny Perry (71-63--134), Scott Verplank (66-69--135) and Rocco Mediate (64-71--135) have positioned themselves to join a rather exclusive list of players who have won multiple Buick Opens: Tiger Woods (2006, 2002); Vijay Singh (2005, 2004, 1997); Julius Boros (1967, 1963); Tony Lema (1965, 1964). Vijay Singh is the only Buick Open champion to card one of his first two rounds in the 70s and still win in the past eight years. This is a statistic that might not bode well for Mediate (64-71--135), Bateman (65-70--135), or Steve Elkington (66-70--136). Elkington's opening rounds of 66-70--136 leave him at eight-under par for the event. This is his lowest opening 36 holes in relation to par since the 2006 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, where he carded rounds of 64-70--134 en route to a T35 finish.
Rich Barcelo's second-round 65 ties his career low for a PGA TOUR event. Barcelo previously shot 65 in his hometown of Reno, Nevada, in the second round of the 2005 Reno-Tahoe Open. Bogey-free rounds: Gavin Coles, Brian Davis. Brian Davis is the only player in the field to record zero bogeys through two rounds. Jeff Sluman's rounds of 70-71--141 assure that he will play the weekend and finish in the money at the Buick Open for a record 20th time (in 23 starts). Robert Gamez, currently 147th in FedExCup points, is tied for 20th through two rounds at the Buick Open. George McNeill (145th) and Steve Allan (146th) both missed the cut this week. Bubba Dickerson recorded the 19th hole-in-one in Buick Open history on Friday with a 5-iron from 191 yards on the par-3 eighth. This is the third hole-in-one at the eighth in tournament history and the fourth consecutive year in which the Buick Open has had an ace. At the end of round two, five past Buick Open champions sat in the top-10. The Buick Open has had a minimum of two past champions in the top-10 through 36 holes in each of the past five years -- 2007: Furyk, Perry, Mediate, Verplank, Austin; 2006: Woods, Singh, Austin, Furyk, Verplank; 2005: Singh, Woods; 2004: Furyk, Singh, Woods; 2003: Woods, Austin. Former Michigan State golfer Andrew Ruthkoski of Muskegon, MI carded rounds of 69-70 in his second career start at the Buick Open. The sponsor's exemption shot 77-72 149 en route to missing the cut in the 2006 Buick Open. Shigeki Maruyama and John Cook withdrew prior to the start of the second round. Copyright 2007 PGATOUR.com.
