John Deere Classic: Second-Round Notebook

Jul. 13, 2007

SILVIS, Ill. -- The 36-hole cut at the John Deere Classic fell at 2-under-par 140 on Friday as 73 players were able to make it to the weekend.

• This is the first time in Nathan Green's PGA TOUR career that he has been the leader or co-leader through 36 holes. Green sat in solo second through two rounds at THE PLAYERS Championship earlier this year before eventually finishing T16. His second-round 63 is the lowest round of his PGA TOUR career.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
SCORING AVERAGES THIS WEEK
Round Front 9 Back 9 Total
Thursday 34.923 35.917 70.840
Friday 34.786 35.429 70.214

Carl Pettersson's second-round 64 featured one-putts on holes one through six. This marks the second straight round in which Pettersson has one-putted those holes. Pettersson's 64 is his lowest score in a PGA TOUR event since the opening round of the 2004 Honda Classic (63-68-76-75--282).

• Only three players (Ernie Els, Jose Coceres, and Boo Weekley) have recorded 100 putts or fewer in a PGA TOUR event this year. Through two rounds, Pettersson has 48 total putts. Pettersson is ranked T135 in Putting Average on TOUR this year.

• Carl Pettersson and Duffy Waldorf are in the top-five in Putting Average this week, yet not in the top-125 for that statistic on the season. Pettersson's season average is 1.810, while Waldorf's is 1.811 (138).

• Nationwide Tour graduate Jason Dufner posted rounds of 65-66--131 to put himself in contention heading into the weekend. The former Auburn Tiger has found success in the state of Illinois, as evidenced by his win at the 2006 LaSalle Bank Open in Chicago, arguably the second-largest event on the Nationwide Tour.

• Dufner played the first 33 holes of the tournament without a bogey before recording bogeys on two of his last three holes (Nos. 7 and 9).

• The John Deere Classic has produced 18 first-time winners on the PGA TOUR through the years. Through two rounds, six players are in the top-10 and still looking for their first TOUR win: Nathan Green, Jason Dufner, Tim Clark, Bob May, Brian Gay, and Brendon de Jonge.

• With six weeks remaining until the start of the FedExCup Playoffs, Jason Dufner (140th in points) and Duffy Waldorf (144th) have positioned themselves for a late season climb up the official Points Standings.

• How important is Scrambling around TPC Deere Run? Through two rounds, there are seven players in the top-10 in both the tournament and Scrambling: Tim Clark, Nathan Green, Bob May, Jason Dufner, Kenny Perry, Billy Mayfair, and Kevin Sutherland.

• First-round leader Neal Lancaster backed up his opening-round 64 with a round of 68 and currently sits in solo fourth. The 1994 GTE Byron Nelson Classic champion has not found himself in the top-five of a PGA TOUR event through 36 holes since the 2004 B.C. Open, where he eventually finished T7.

• Players who teed off in the morning wave on Friday took advantage of near-perfect conditions as shown by the scoring averages. The morning wave finished with an average of 69.69 while players in the afternoon wave averaged 70.74.

• Bob May's opening rounds of 66-67--133 have him in position to record his first top-10 finish of the 2007 PGA TOUR season. May has only recorded two top-10 finishes on the PGA TOUR since his sensational duel with Tiger Woods at the 2000 PGA Championship.

John Senden's 36-hole total of 7-over-par 149 left him nine shots shy of making the weekend. He becomes the first John Deere Classic defending champion to miss the cut since Michael Clark II did so in 2001 after claiming the title in 2000.

• With a round of 67 on Friday, Kevin Sutherland has now carded a second round in the 60s in each of the seven years in which he has played the John Deere Classic.

• Bogey-free rounds on Friday came from Nathan Green, Kenny Perry, Billy Mayfair, Brady Schnell, Bob May, Kyle Reifers, Troy Matteson, Chris Couch, Steve Allan, Chris Riley and Steve Jones.

• Tim Clark's opening rounds of 68-65--133 have positioned him for an 11th hour run at a spot in the Open Championship. Clark has played in the past 15 major championships with three top-10 finishes, highlighted by a runner-up finish at the 2006 Masters Tournament. Clark has made two cuts in four appearances at the British Open, with his best finish being T23 in 2005 at St. Andrews.

• This week's John Deere Classic marks the last opportunity to earn a 2007 Open Championship exemption -- The leading player at the John Deere Classic inside the top-10, not otherwise exempt, will gain a spot in the Carnoustie field. Ties will be decided by the better final-round score, and if players are still tied the better third-round score and better second-round score will be the determining factor.

Bubba Watson was disqualified during the second round for playing a shot with a non-conforming 8-iron. The club was damaged, yet not in the normal course of play, therefore rendering the club non-conforming.

Carlos Franco's second-round 68 featured eight putts on the front nine and 21 total putts overall. The PGA TOUR record for 18 holes is 18 putts, shared by six players. The record for nine holes is, amazingly, six putts, set by Stan Utley on the front nine of his second round at the 2002 Air Canada Championship.
