Oberholser withdraws, citing hand injury

Sep. 6, 2007

LEMONT, Ill. -- Arron Oberholser withdrew from the BMW Championship after playing nine holes on Thursday, citing hand and wrist injuries.

Oberholser had tied for second last week at the Deutsche Bank Championship to climb 38 spots to 29th in the FexEdCup standings. The top 30 on Sunday make the field for THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola, the final event in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup.

Oberholser, though, said Thursday that even if he should remain in the top 30, his injuries would keep him away from Atlanta next week.

"I won't be able to play at East Lake, even if I made it," he said. "It doesn't look like I'd make the field. There are a lot of players playing well, even though it is the first round. The points are packed so tight, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get lapped this week."

Oberholser had fractured the hamate bone in his left hand about four months ago while hitting a ball out of the rough. On Thursday, both hands were bothering him, as well as his wrists.

"It's been hurting pretty consistently since the U.S. Open," Oberholser said. "Just before the U.S. Open I started to get some real bad tendonitis, and I don't know if the fracture has gotten worse, but it's a case where the stuff around it is starting to have to compensate, and the right hand is having to compensate because of the lack of strength in the left hand.

"I just have whole mess of issues right now -- arms and wrists and hands."

Doctors have told Oberholser that he needs three weeks of rest with therapy three to four days a week. He hopes to be ready to return to competition at the Fry's Electronics Open, Oct. 15-21.

Oberholser has been plagued by injuries this year. He also had a bulging disc in his back earlier this year and was unable to defend his title at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Oberholser said he was extremely disappointed not to have a chance to play in THE TOUR Championship.

"Finishing the year at East Lake in the top 30 on the money list or FedExCup points list, you've had a good year," he said. "I love the course there and was pointing towards that. I just can't go any more."
