FedExCup Movers and Shakers: Round 1

Sep. 6, 2007

Players who improved their FedExCup points position after Round 1

byrd_100.jpg

Player: Jonathan Byrd
Friday's Score/Position: 64 (-7)/1
FedExCup Standing Before BMW Championship: 30
Projected FedExCup Standing After Round 1: 5
Summary: Byrd wants very badly to play in his first TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola, and his opening 64 served notice that he'll not only ensure his spot in the field at East Lake, but also give himself an outside chance at winning the FedExCup if he maintains this level of play.

villegas_100.jpg

Player: Camilo Villegas
Friday's Score/Position: 65 (-6)/T2
FedExCup Standing Before BMW Championship: 34
Projected FedExCup Standing After Round 1: 15
Summary: The Columbian kid is on a tear that may get him all the way through the Playoffs. A tie for 10th at the PGA Championship got him started, and he's finished tied for 21st and tied for ninth in the first two Playoff events. Now a sterling 66 has moved him into the coveted top 30.

rose_100.jpg

Player: Justin Rose
Friday's Score/Position: 65 (-6)/T2
FedExCup Standing Before BMW Championship: 23
Projected FedExCup Standing After Round 1: 7
Summary: Rose has bounced back impressively after missing the cut at the Deutsche Bank Championship, where he felt like he was ready to win his first PGA TOUR event. Maybe he's just a week tardy.

cink_100.jpg

Player: Stewart Cink
Friday's Score/Position: 66 (-5)/T4
FedExCup Standing Before BMW Championship: 32
Projected FedExCup Standing After Round 1: 25
Summary: A Presidents Cup player and five-time qualifier for THE TOUR Championship, Cink arrived at Cog Hill on the outside looking in for THE TOUR Championship. Since tying for sixth at the Open Championship, he's not been on form, and missed the cut in Boston. This puts the Atlanta-area resident back in the mix.

perez_100.jpg

Player: Pat Perez
Friday's Score/Position: 66 (-5)/T4
FedExCup Standing Before BMW Championship: 46
Projected FedExCup Standing After Round 1: 32
Summary: Like Rose, Perez' best finish is second place. A victory would be doubly sweet as it would lift him into the top 30. On top of that, all he has for his first two Playoff starts is a missed cut and a withdrawal, so he's overdue to have a better finish and score much-needed points.

Players who fell in the FedExCup points after Round 1

johnson_100.jpg

Player: Zach Johnson
Friday's Score/Position: 72 (+1)/T44
FedExCup Standing Before BMW Championship: 10
Projected FedExCup Standing After Round 1: 16
Summary: After a 1-over 72 the reigning Masters champion has fallen out of the top 10 in the standings, and though he is not in danger of missing a trip to Georgia -- where he has won twice this year and all three of his TOUR titles -- he doesn't want to fall too far down the list and not have a chance at the big prize when he visits his favorite golfing state.

ogilvy_100.jpg

Player: Geoff Ogilvy
Friday's Score/Position: 78 (+7)/65
FedExCup Standing Before BMW Championship: 8
Projected FedExCup Standing After Round 1: 13
Summary: Sixth or better in his last three starts, Ogilvy looked like a man on a late-season mission, but the former U.S. Open champ struggled to hit fairways and needed 33 putts on Cog Hill's large greens and paid a heavy price. Fortunately, he has three rounds to right the ship.

kelly_100.jpg

Player: Jerry Kelly
Friday's Score/Position: 74 (+3)/T54
FedExCup Standing Before BMW Championship: 27
Projected FedExCup Standing After Round 1: 31
Summary: A former winner at Cog Hill, Kelly seemed poised to do some damage. Instead, he hurt his place in the pecking order and now sits outside the top 30. Like Ogilvy, Kelly needs to clean up his work on the greens after a 32-putt effort.

toms_100.jpg

Player: David Toms
Friday's Score/Position: 71 (E)/T44
FedExCup Standing Before BMW Championship: 31
Projected FedExCup Standing After Round 1: 37
Summary: Trying to gut out the season despite a recurrence of his ailing back from a year ago, Toms has a seven-year TOUR Championship streak to protect. It didn't start well, but he didn't shoot himself out of it either.

weekely_100.jpg

Player: Boo Weekley
Friday's Score/Position: 75 (+4)/T59
FedExCup Standing Before BMW Championship: 20
Projected FedExCup Standing After Round 1: 26
Summary: The Verizon Heritage champion just didn't put together the kind of ball-striking round that he has been exhibiting for much of the year. After a tie for ninth at the PGA, Weekley hasn't been sharp. Has to be careful not to fall farther.
