The Stanford St. Jude Championship holds the distinction of being one of the longest running events on the PGA TOUR. It is a tournament steeped in golf history and a tradition of commitment to saving the lives children around the world affected by catastrophic diseases. The tournament now known as the Stanford St. Jude Championship was founded in 1958 as the Memphis Open by seven Memphis businessmen who hatched their plan in the grill at the old Colonial Country Club in East Memphis.

Since then, quite a few numbers have been posted.

NUMBER THAT CAN WIN YOU A BET

1The number of tornadoes that have touched down on the tournament site during tournament week. In 1986, During the first year that FedEx was the title sponsor of the St. Jude Classic, a tornado ripped through the pro-am leaving trash and debris strewn across the golf course.

NUMBER THAT COULD BE CHALLENGED THIS WEEK, BUT PROBABLY WON'T

11The number of shots to par made up by John Mahaffey over the weekend to win in 1989. Mahaffey, who trailed third-round leaders Bob Gilder and Bernhard Langer by three at the start of Sunday's play, holed a 25-foot birdie putt on the 15th hole to take the lead for good. He finished at 12-under-par 272.

8The number of shots Hal Sutton started Sunday off the lead when he won in 1985, the largest final-round deficit overcome by a winner in tournament history. Sutton avoided apparent trouble with a 30-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to beat David Orgrin. He had to wait for more than an hour to find out if his 279 would hold up. Ogrin missed a six-footer for a birdie on 18 that forced the playoff.
