Pick: Tiger Woods

Umm... Let me think. Yeah, I'll go with ... drum roll, please ... Tiger Woods. Woods gets up for every tournament he plays and if he knows that -- aside from the majors -- there are four other tournaments with more significance than the non-majors, he's sure to be dangerous. Not to mention, the break after the first three Playoff events only benefits Woods. It means we have the potential to see him compete in all four this time around. Aside from Woods, I believe Adam Scott will put up a fight to claim the season-long crown.

You're thinking, duh, it's definitely going to be Tiger Woods. But if Phil Mickelson or Steve Stricker had performed better in THE 2007 TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola, last year Woods could have been given a run for his money. I'm expecting Woods to win again in 2008, but I think that Mickelson might sneak off with the title this season.

Tiger goes back-to-back everywhere. Why not here? You know the streak is coming every year. It's just a matter of when and where. And with some of his favorite courses at the end of the Playoffs -- well, he won the last two and tied for second in the one before that. He stands up, he wins. If not Tiger, though, then consider Steve Stricker. He was second a year ago, but might have been first had you-know-who not been in the fields. There are no more questions about Stricker's game. His drive? C'mon. You don't go from nowhere to here in 18 months without it. His game is suited to the courses in the Playoffs and he's not afraid to go head-to-head with the defending champ.

Tiger, of course. He's just got too much game. If you're looking for a longshot, though, try K.J. Choi. He had a great 2007 and works as hard as anyone this side of a certain Fijian.

Maybe Phil Mickelson will challenge Tiger for the FedExCup. Maybe someone else will emerge like Steve Stricker and K.J. Choi did in '07. But the fact of the matter is that in a 72-hole competition, Tiger has the greatest winning percentage of all time. Give him four (or 3 of 4) and he is unbeatable ... period.

I learned my lesson last year -- you can't pick against Tiger Woods when he's in the field. We saw Steve Stricker give him a run for his money last year, though, and this year's FedExCup offers a world of possibilities. If Tiger doesn't go back-to-back, then my bet would be a resurgent Vijay Singh, who wants to atone for a lackluster 2007 and won't have the Ryder Cup to occupy his thoughts.

Pick: Phil Mickelson
Phil Mickelson. Tiger Woods already has this notch in his holster. He'll be moving on -- mentally and psychologically -- towards loading up on majors. Mickelson still has designs as writing himself further into golf lore, and winning the second FedExCup on the heels of Tiger's triumph in 2007 can accomplish that almost as effectively as winning Grand Slam tournaments. A full year with Butch Harmon and better health could do Lefty wonders.
