Verizon Heritage: Third-Round Notebook PGA TOUR Staff HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Sunday at the Verizon Heritage has always provided plenty of drama as the last eight events have been decided by two shots or less. Due to inclement weather forecast for Sunday morning, final-round tee times will run from 11:10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in threesomes off No. 1 and No. 10 tees. The last time there were weather problems at the Verizon Heritage was in 2001, when play was suspended Sunday afternoon and forced to resume on Monday morning. The last time rain affected play on the PGA TOUR was two weeks ago at the Shell Houston Open. Play was suspended Saturday for six hours, resulting in some players finishing their third rounds on Sunday morning. ![]() Ernie Els is looking for his fifth come-from-behind victory on the PGA TOUR. Ernie Els has come from behind to win a PGA TOUR event four times in his career. They were the 1997 U.S. Open (1-stroke victory over Colin Montgomerie); 1999 Nissan Open (2-stroke victory over Ted Tryba, Tiger Woods, Davis Love); 2003 Sony Open in Hawaii (playoff win over Aaron Baddeley; 2004 Sony Open in Hawaii (playoff win over Harrison Frazar). Should Els finish in the top-10 on Sunday, he would join a select group of six players who have seven or more top-10 finishes at the Verizon Heritage. Davis Love III heads the list with 11 top-10s. Leading up to this week, Jerry Kelly has been the 54-hole leader or co-leader five times in his PGA TOUR career. Kelly was only able to convert one of those leads into a victory, which came in 2002 at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Jerry Kelly recorded the 13th hole-in-one in Verizon Heritage history on Saturday. Kelly used a 4-iron to ace the par-3 fourth, which was the first at the event since Blaine McCallister and Jeff Sluman recorded one each in 1996. It was the third hole-in-one of Kelly's career. His first came at the 1999 Nissan Open while his second one dropped at the 2002 TOUR Championship. Kevin Na's best PGA TOUR finish in 2007 is a T33 at the Nissan Open. He has played in six tournaments and has made three cuts. His best career finish on TOUR is T2 at the 2005 FBR Open and the 2005 Chrysler Classic of Tuscon. Defending PLAYERS Champion Stephen Ames, posted a front-nine score of 30, just two shots off the tournament record for that side. In 2003, Craig Barlow shot a 28 on the front nine at Harbour Town Golf Links. Ames' third-round 64 is the lowest Saturday score at the Verizon Heritage since Jeff Sluman shot 64 on the same day in 2003. Boo Weekley recorded his first career PGA TOUR top-10 in February of this year at the Mayakoba Golf Classic at Riviera Maya-Cancun and followed it up with a T2 the next week at The Honda Classic. Saturday's round marks the first time in his career in which he has carded three straight rounds in the 60s.
Stephen Leaney currently holds the PGA TOUR streak for rounds under par. The Australian has fired eight straight rounds below par and counting. Five players with a chance to shoot all four rounds in the 60s: They are Kevin Na (67-68-66), Sean O'Hair (69-66-69), Boo Weekley (67-69-66), Dean Wilson (69-68-68) and Rod Pampling (69-67-69). Billy Mayfair (2006) was the last player to post four straight rounds in the 60s at the Verizon Heritage. The most players to do so in one year was in 2003, when six players shot in the 60s, including champion Davis Love III, who has accomplished the feat four times in his career. PGA TOUR winner Jason Bohn used an eagle at the par-4 18th en route to shooting a third-round 68. Copyright 2007 PGATOUR.com. All rights reserved. |
