| Memorable Moments: Mudd's Exceptional Putter After he won the 1990 PLAYERS Championship, Jodie Mudd said, "When I putt exceptionally well, I usually do well." So well, in fact, that he survived a bogey finish on No. 18 to win THE PLAYERS by a stroke over Mark Calcavecchia. Finishing third that year was Steve Jones. ![]() Jodie Mudd's putter never let him down at the 1990 PLAYERS Championship. In 1990, it was Mudd who was capturing his share of notoriety on his way to a career year. Mudd held the first- and third-round leads at the TPC Sawgrass. Only three players shooting 68s bettered his final-round 69 that earned Mudd the title. The win didn't come without some tense moments, though, with the drama coming not surprisingly at the infamous 17th and 18th holes at the Stadium Course. Interestingly, Mudd had to play the 17th hole twice Sunday, finishing his third round early in the morning after rain postponed play Saturday. On his first go around at the island green, Mudd deposited his 9-iron tee shot into the water and made double bogey. Despite that mistake, Mudd ignored what had happened there earlier in the day, came back late Sunday afternoon and took dead aim at the pin. This time his shot landed 10 feet from the hole. As he turned from the shot, Calcavecchia gave him a high-five. "It was a gutsy shot, but I got away with it and made birdie," Mudd said. Added Calcavecchia, "The bottom line was he made a 2 at 17, and not too many people could make 2 there with a one-shot lead in this tournament." That kept Mudd at a two-shot advantage, allowing him to bogey the final hole and still win when Calcavecchia couldn't birdie. Mudd had 110 putts for the week, helping explain his win on the Stadium Course's tricky greens. "This week I just seemed to see the line," he said. |
