FBR Open: Third-Round Notebook

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz -- The completion of round two of the FBR Open was delayed 50 minutes due to frost Saturday morning. Round two was completed and the 36-hole cut was made at 2 under par. A total of 74 players made the cut.

• Round three was contested in threesomes off both the first and 10th tees. Tee times were from 9:45 to 11:45 a.m.

• The fourth and final round Sunday will feature threesomes off both the first and 10th tees again. Tee times will run from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. with an expected finish time of 3:55 p.m. local time.

• The 54-hole leaderboard is dotted by players with ties to the Phoenix area. Leader Jeff Quinney (-16) lives in Scottsdale and attended Arizona State University. Aaron Baddeley (-14) lives in Scottsdale. Robert Garrigus (-12) lives in Scottsdale and plays out of TPC Scottsdale. And Billy Mayfair (-11) lives and plays at TPC Scottsdale and attended Arizona State.

• This is the first time in rookie Jeff Quinney's career that he has held the 54-hole lead in a PGA TOUR event. Heading into the final round, Quinney's previous career-best came two weeks ago at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic when he was tied for fourth after 72 holes in the 90-hole event. Quinney was four shots off the lead heading into the final round at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. He was only three shots off the 54-hole lead at last week's Buick Invitational.

• Jeff Quinney was on top of the leader board after 54 holes twice last year on the Nationwide Tour. Quinney held a two-shot lead after three rounds of the Livermore Valley Wine Country Championship but shot a final-round 75 and wound up third, five shots back of winner Tripp Isenhour. Quinney also shared the 54-hole lead with Boo Weekley and Nick Flanagan at the Price Cutter Charity Championship (Springfield, Mo.) but struggled to a 73 and tied for 10th.

• Jeff Quinney has a chance to win a professional tournament in front of his family and friends for the third time in his career. His first win as a pro came at the 2002 Scottsdale Swing at McCormick Ranch as part of the Canadian Tour. He won the 2004 Oregon Classic on the Nationwide Tour in Eugene, Ore., where he graduated from high school.

• Scottsdale resident Aaron Baddeley shot a bogey-free 7-under 64 to move to 14 under and second place after three rounds. Baddeley earned his first career title at the 2006 Verizon Heritage in Hilton Head, S.C., where he shared the 54-hole lead with Jim Furyk.

• Jeff Quinney (1) and Aaron Baddeley (2) are also tied for the lead this week in putting average (1.407) along with Lee Janzen (T43/2 under). They each have 76 total putts for the first three days.

Brett Quigley, making his 287th career start, is in solid position to make a run at his first PGA TOUR win. The Rhode Island native shot a 66 and is tied for third, three back of leader Jeff Quinney. Quigley has not enjoyed previous success at TPC Scottsdale, having missed the cut in 1997 and 2002. He tied for 55th in 2005 and tied for 53rd last year.

David Toms birdied his final three holes Saturday to post a 3-under 68. Toms is 11 under and tied for eighth heading into Sunday's final round. Toms is making his 12th start in this event. He has finished in the top 20 the last five years, including a best effort T4 in 2005.

• Big-hitting Bubba Watson birdied the 560-yard, par-5 15th hole despite hitting his tee shot in the water. After taking a drop, Watson hit the green from 241 yards out and then rolled in a birdie putt of 20 feet, 8 inches. Watson then added a par-4 on the 314-yard, 17th hole after hitting his tee shot into the water again. Watson rolled in a putt of 11 feet 2 inches for his par. He shot a 2-under 69 and is tied for eighth place.

• The players who were bogey-free on Saturday were: Aaron Baddeley (64), Brett Quigley (66), Dean Wilson (65), Steve Elkington (67), Fred Funk (67), Bob Estes (66), Justin Rose (66), Jeff Gove ( 68) and Jose Maria Olazabal ( 68).

Troy Matteson moved into contention by matching the best round of the day, a 7-under-par 64. The 64 also tied Matteson's career-low round on the PGA TOUR. Matteson is 10-under through three rounds and six shots back of leader Jeff Quinney.

Heath Slocum celebrated his 33rd birthday Saturday by shooting a 4-under 67 to get to 11 under par.

• A total of 58 players in the field of 74 went for the green on the short, par-4, 17th hole (314 yards). Only four reached the green, with Brett Wetterich (12 feet) the closest of the four. There were no eagles on that hole today.

Rod Pampling had an eagle 2 on the 482-yard, par-4 8th hole. Pampling dunked his second shot from 185 yards.

• The par-71 TPC Scottsdale played to a scoring average of 70.381 on Thursday, 69.899 on Friday and 69.270 on Saturday.
