Sep. 19, 2007

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- U.S. Presidents Cup Team Captain Jack Nicklaus has announced that Jeff Sluman will again serve as captain's assistant for the 2007 Presidents Cup, to be held Sept. 25-30 at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Sluman previously served as captain's assistant to Nicklaus at both the memorable 2003 Presidents Cup in South Africa, which ended in a 17-17 tie, and the 2005 Presidents Cup in Prince William County, Va., which the U.S. Team won on the final hole of the final match.

"Jeff has been an important part of the U.S. Team for the past two Presidents Cups," said Nicklaus, who is making his fourth appearance as U.S. Team captain (1998, 2003, and 2005). "I've enjoyed working with Jeff and it only feels right to have him as part of the team again as we head to Montreal.

"Jeff is well-respected by all the players, and he is knowledgeable about the game and what it takes to win. Although Jeff is about to make his Champions Tour debut, he remains very active and competitive on the PGA TOUR, so he will be able to provide me with much-needed input going into The Presidents Cup and every step of the way."

Sluman, a member of the PGA TOUR since 1983, is a six-time winner with his biggest victory coming at the 1988 PGA Championship, where he shot a final-round 65 to win by three strokes. He has earned more than $18 million in his 25-year career, which places him 23rd among career money leaders.

"I couldn't be happier to once again serve as assistant to Jack," said Sluman. "Being a part of the past two Presidents

Cups has been an incredible experience, and assisting one of the greatest players in history and a true ambassador of the game will certainly go down as a highlight of my career. I really look forward to helping the U.S. Team in whatever way I can in Montreal."

The U.S. Presidents Cup Team will be named Aug. 13, following the PGA Championship. The top-10 U.S. players who earn the most official PGA TOUR money from Aug. 15, 2005, through Aug. 13 (with money earned in 2007 counting as double) automatically make the team. Captain Nicklaus will announce his two captain's selections to round out his 12-man team on Aug. 14.

Currently, the top-15 in 2007 U.S. Team eligibility are 1. Tiger Woods, 2. Jim Furyk, 3. Phil Mickelson, 4. Zach Johnson, 5. Charles Howell III, 6. David Toms, 7. Steve Stricker, 8. Stewart Cink, 9. Scott Verplank, 10. Lucas Glover, 11. John Rollins, 12. Brett Wetterich, 13. Mark Calcavecchia, 14. Chad Campbell and 15. Jerry Kelly.

Gary Player, captain of the International Team, is expected to name his captain's assistant in the near future.

The Presidents Cup, a team match play competition featuring 24 of the world's top golfers -- 12 from the United States and 12 from around the world, excluding Europe -- is held every two years, and since 1996 has alternated between United States and international venues. The Presidents Cup was developed to give the world's best non-European players an opportunity to compete in international team match-play competition. The U.S. Team has won four of the six previous Presidents Cups, and the only outright win by the International Team came at the 1998 event in Melbourne. The 2003 Presidents Cup ended in a tie.
