Three tied as second round in Scranton shortened by rain

MOOSIC, Pa. - The second round of the Nationwide Tour's Northeast Pennsylvania Classic was delayed after overnight and morning storms caused tournament officials to deem the course unplayable early Friday morning.

After tee times were originally pushed from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., two groups were able to tee off before officials called for another delay at 10:21 a.m. due to standing water on the fairways. This delay lasted 2 hours and 40 minutes.

The second round resumed with tee times from 1 p.m. until 7:50 p.m. on Friday.

On the course, Richard Johnson and D.A. Points are the clubhouse leaders at 10-under-par with first-round leader Chad Collins on the course also at 10-under-par thru four holes.

Points shot 6-under on the day, while Johnson shot 7-under 64. Points has made 11 of 18 cuts this season and is a three-time winner on the Nationwide Tour including a winner at this event in 2004. The 30-year-old graduate of the University of Illinois also won the Pete Dye West Virginia Classic that year to finish the season No. 2 on the money list.

"The greens are a little softer, but being the first out, they were real smooth," he said. "So making putts was accessible if you just had the right line."

Johnson has made the cut in six consecutive events this season. At No. 36 on the money list this year, the 35-year-old from Cardiff, Wales, could find himself inside "The 25" with a strong finish this weekend. Johnson is a two-time champion on the Nationwide Tour with wins at the 1999 Florida Classic and the 2000 Monterey Peninsula Classic.

"This course is in great shape," Johnson said. "Even with all of that rain, the greens were still fast. It is a beautiful golf course."

The second round will resume at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday with players beginning where their rounds ended on Friday night.

Second Round News & Notes: Patrick Sheehan scored the second hole-in-one of the tournament on Friday. Sheehan hit a pitching wedge from 134 yards on hole No. 2.... Michael Sims withdrew during the round due to injury. .. Second-round play began at 10 a.m. ET. At 10:21 a.m play was stopped. Play resumed at 1:00 p.m. and then suspended at 7:54 p.m. due to darkness.
