Chalmers holds clubhouse lead as darkness falls in Midland PGA TOUR Staff MIDLAND, Texas -- With the second round halted by darkness and four groups remaining on the course Friday, Greg Chalmers holds the clubhouse lead after posting a 7-under-par 65 to move to 11 under par after two days at the WNB Golf Classic. Monday Qualifier Brian Guetz and last week's runner-up Jeremy Anderson are in the clubhouse as well, one stroke off the lead. ![]() Greg Chalmers has put together rounds of 68 and 65 in the Permian Basin. The race to move into THE 25 continues on the Nationwide Tour with just four weeks remaining for players to move into the top 25 on the Nationwide Tour money list and qualify for the PGA TOUR. Chalmers ranks 35th on the money list with three top-10 finishes this year and eight top-25 finishes. Chalmers needs a strong finish this week to move toward his ultimate goal. "This time of year, the last eight weeks of the season, each tournament starts to feel like q-school," Chalmers said of trying to move into the top 25. "You can't judge the year until it is all said and done. There are still four weeks left and hopefully I can finish strong." Anderson nearly won last week, but fell to Richard Johnson on the first playoff hole at the Mark Christopher Charity Classic. With his runner-up finish, Anderson moved to No. 26 on the money list. Since taking a week off in September, Anderson has three top-10 finishes and has made four straight cuts. The UNLV graduate injured his ankle in August and credits the time off to rehab his ankle, but also to refocus. "The week off did wonders for me," Anderson said. "The ankle really responded to treatment and it was good to get off of it for a week. It might have helped me more mentally, though. I was able to get refreshed and focus on playing good golf and gaining confidence again." Anderson is approximately $1,200 behind No. 25-ranked Brenden Pappas, who also had a good first two rounds and is 9 under par. Pappas has recorded a string of good starts to recent tournaments, but has not been able to cash in on the weekends. He has made nine straight cuts and has three top-10 finishes in the process. "I'm playing really well lately," Pappas said. "But I have to find a way to take the relaxed frame of mind that I have on Thursday and Friday and play that way on the weekend. Once Saturday and Sunday hit, it is easy to get distracted with the money list, where I am on the leaderboard. I've got to stay relaxed through the entire tournament." Playing in his third Nationwide Tour event of the season Guetz (pronounced Gootz), has a different No. 25 on his mind. With no status on the Nationwide Tour this year, Guetz can earn a spot in next week's Chattanooga Classic with a top-25 finish this week. The 33-year-old played 26 holes on Friday after rain and lightning postponed Thursday's opening round. Guetz finished a sizzling first round 9-under-par 63 before shooting a 1-under-par 71 for his second round. The 63 is the Oklahoma State graduate's best career- round on the Nationwide Tour. His previous low was a 66 that he shot earlier this season at the Price Cutter Charity Championship. The first round resumed at 8:10 a.m. CT on Friday, and second-round tee times were pushed back to 9:10 a.m. Second-round play was suspended at 7:23 p.m. due to darkness and will be completed Saturday morning. Third-round tee times will begin at 10:15 a.m. CT and end at 12:15 p.m. with players paired in groups of threes and going off two tees. News & Notes: Ricky Barnes and Albertsons Boise Open winner Jon Mills began the week tied for most consecutive cuts made at 10. Barnes' streak will end as he finished the second round at 4 over par for the tournament. Mills will need to continue his solid play as he is still on the course at 6 under par for the tournament with two holes remaining in his second round. |
