| May. 29, 2007 Eduardo Romero is on a roll in the majors. (Cox/WireImage) Hale Irwin has played in 50 Champions Tour events that feature 36-hole cuts and made the cut in each of them.Eduardo Romero has finished first or second in the last three Champions Tour majors. He lost in a playoff at the 2006 Senior British Open, won the JELD-WEN Tradition and finished second last week at the Senior PGA Championship.Italy's Costantino Rocca made his Champions Tour debut last week and finished in a T66.Denis Watson's victory last week at the Senior PGA Championship was his first on the Champions Tour and made him the first player from Zimbabwe to win on the circuit. With Brad Bryant's second consecutive win at the Regions Charity Classic two weeks ago, the Boeing Championship at Sandestin is now the oldest event without a repeat winner (12 different champions in its history).Bobby Wadkins will try to successfully defend a title on the Champions Tour for just the first time in his career in only his second attempt. Last year at Sandestin, Wadkins went wire-to-wire to win for the first time in almost five years. He went on to capture the Constellaiton Energy Senior Players Championship later in the 2006 season. After undergoing a series of lower-back surgeries, Peter Jacobsen is now back on the Champions Tour. Jacobsen missed the latter part of March, all of April and the early part of May rehabbing his back. He finished T8 last year at the Boeing Championship at Sandestin. Hale Irwin will celebrate his 62nd birthday this Sunday, June 3, but the Champions Tour's winningest player shows no signs of slowing down. Since the start of the 2002 season, Irwin has more top-10 finishes (68) than any other player.Craig Stadler will celebrate his 54th birthday this Saturday, June 2. Stadler looks to win his first event since the 2004 SAS Championship. Last year at Sandestin, he trailed by three strokes after 36 holes and eventually tied for third in the event. He tied for ninth in 2005, his only other appearance in this tournament, after shooting 60 at The Moors on Saturday.Jay Haas makes his first appearance in The Boeing Championship at Sandestin and comes into the event as the only multiple winner on the Champions Tour in 2007. One distinction Haas will be trying to break this week is his lack of success in Florida. He's never won a title in the Sunshine State. In official events on both the PGA TOUR and Champions Tour, Haas is 0-for-107 (102 PGA TOUR starts and five Champions Tour starts). After finishing second at both the Allianz Championship in Boca Raton and the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am near Tampa earlier this year, Haas claimed his first 2007 title at the Toshiba Classic in Southern California. He most recently was a playoff winner over Tom Kite at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf in Savannah, GA. On the PGA TOUR in the Florida Panhandle, Haas' best efforts were a tie for 14th at the 1980 Tallahassee Open and a tie for 39th at the 1984 Pensacola Open. |
