Hubert Green: At A Glance

His future World Golf Hall of Fame Career began at the age of five, when Green first started to play the game. Green joined the TOUR in 1970 as a 24-year-old and won his first event during his rookie season in 1971. After winning 19 times on the PGA TOUR over 26 years, Green earned four victories on the Champions Tour, with his last coming in 2002. Unfortunately, cancer cut his season short in June of 2003, when doctors removed a malignant growth on his left tonsil and back of his tongue that was discovered during a routine dental exam. Green lost over 30 pounds during chemotherapy and radiation treatment, but still returned to the Champions Tour in mid-2004. In 2006, Green passed the $8-million mark in total career earnings after a tie for 32nd at the Boeing Championship at Sandestin.

By the Numbers:

1First victory was at the Houston Champions International, where he defeated Don January in a playoff. That win, coupled with a strong season, led to Green being named Rookie of the Year in 1971.
3Won three consecutive events in 1976, which he says was his biggest thrill in golf. Also was a member of three Ryder Cup teams, in 1977, 1979 and 1985.
4Events Green won twice while on TOUR, including the Greater Jacksonville Open, Southern Open, Heritage Classic and the Hawaiian Open

19Last PGA TOUR win came at a major: the 1985 PGA Championship at Cherry Hills, where he beat Lee Trevino down the stretch. His other major victory came at the 1977 U.S. Open at Southern Hills.
