Champions Tour stars make Daytona 500 picks

Feb. 15, 2007

Editor's Note: Both the Champions Tour and NASCAR are in Florida this week, with the checkered flag crew kicking their season off in Daytona while the pin flag guys are at the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am near Tampa. Champions Tour media officials Phil Stambaugh and Colin Murray asked golfers to share their thoughts on who will win the Daytona 500.

I follow NASCAR a little bit. I don't know if I can pick out a favorite, I mean I have no knowledge. If you want to talk a little basketball, I can help you there. I'll go with Dale Jarrett, I was visiting with him a couple years ago in Hickory and he seems like an awful nice guy. I think I'll go with him.

I really haven't paid any attention to it the last few weeks, I've been too busy trying to figure out my golf game. Should we go with a sentimental pick or should we go with someone who actually has a chance? I like Dale Jarrett, he's a great guy, but he's switching over to Toyota and I've got a feeling they're not going to have instant success. I think I'll go with Tony Stewart. I'll go with an orange car since I like Oklahoma State.

I'm going to go with Dale Jarrett. I know he plays a lot of golf and is a pretty good player.

I'm going to take Jimmie Johnson since I know Scott Simpson is taking him.

Scott Simpson
I think Jimmie Johnson is going to win. He's from San Diego and I'm a San Diego guy so I'll pick him.

I wouldn't have the slightest idea. Tony Stewart I guess. I haven't really been watching very much, but I guess they're just getting started. I can tell you I won't be taking any of those guys who just lost their pit crew chiefs.

I'm going to take Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon is going to finish second. Dale's going to win because I'm a big fan of his and Gordon is going to finish second because he can drive the hell out of a racecar.

I like Kasey Kahne. He won four or five races last year and he's a good young driver.

I would take Mike Skinner because I met him a few years ago and he's a great guy, but I think he's driving on the truck series now. I told him Mike, you've got to be in something I can watch so I can root for you. Other than that I really don't have any idea.
