Turtle Bay Championship: Final-Round Notes

Jan. 29, 2007

KAHUKU, Hawaii -- Fred Funk's 54-hole total of 23-under-par 193 set a new Turtle Bay Championship scoring mark, shattering the old record of 195 by Jim Colbert (1991) and Bob Murphy (1994). However, Colbert and Murphy posted that number on the Kaanapali North GC, which played at par 70 in 1991 and 71 in 1994.

• Funk's 11-stroke margin was the largest winning margin in a 54-hole Champions Tour tournament, surpassing the previous mark of nine strokes set in 1983 by Rod Funseth at the Hall of Fame Tournament and later matched by Gibby Gilbert at the 1992 Southwestern Bell Classic and Dave Stockton in 1993 at the Franklin Quest Championship. The all-time record for a Champions Tour tournament is 12 strokes by Hale Irwin at the 1997 PGA Seniors' Championship, a 72-hole event.

• Funk's total of 193 tied for the third-lowest 54-hole numerical score in Champions Tour history. The all-time record is 191 by Bruce Fleisher (2002 RJR Championship/19 under) and Loren Roberts (2006 MasterCard Championship/25 under). Four other players also had a 54-hole score of 193.

• Funk played all 54 holes without a bogey and also went wire-to-wire to win. The last player to win an event without a bogey was Brad Bryant at the Regions Charity Classic last May.

• Funk also ran his streak of bogey-free holes to 61. He played the final seven holes at the MasterCard Championship at Hualalai without a bogey.

• This was Funk's second win in his last three Champions Tour starts and both wins were wire-to-wire. He also accomplished the feat at the 2006 AT&T Championship. In addition, that win in San Antonio was in the final full-field event of the 2006 campaign, while today's win was in the first full-field tournament of 2007.

• Funk claimed a total of 240 points in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup race and is now third behind Hale Irwin (290 points) and Tom Kite (249). Loren Roberts is fourth with 204 and Jim Thorpe is fifth with 150.

• Defending champion Loren Roberts had a nice showing, finishing T2 in defense of his crown. Roberts posted a 6-under-par 66 on Sunday giving him 20 straight rounds of par or better. That streak dates back to a final-round 76 at the JELD-WEN Tradition last August. It was also Roberts' sixth straight round in the 60s this year.

• Also turning in a nice performance was sponsor exemption Kiyoshi Murota, who finished T2. His top-10 finish earned him a berth in the next Champions Tour event -- the Allianz Championship in Boca Raton, Fla., should he decide to play.

• The field averaged 70.957 for the tournament, a substantial drop from last year's average of 73.111. A total of 38 players posted rounds in the 60s on Sunday, increasing the total for the tournament to 83. A total of 134 rounds under par were recorded for the three rounds.

Denis Watson had his best finish on the Champions Tour when he joined four others at T2. Watson earned $98,560.

Denny Hepler, the winner of The Big Break VI, finished T72, playing on a sponsor's exemption.

• Hale Irwin, a six-time winner of the event, finished T28 a week after winning the MasterCard Championship at Hualalai.

• Loren Roberts and D.A. Weibring have now posted six straight rounds in the 60s after the first two tournaments.

• The most difficult hole was No. 4 with an average of 3.274 (+.274), while the easiest was No. 3 with an average of 4.620 (-.380).
