Perhaps you'll be shivering in a snow bank, taking a moment from shoveling the walk or cleaning off the car to tighten the knot in your scarf. There's a bite to the cold and yet there you are, flailing away at all that nasty white stuff, knowing it's a few more months until you can wiggle your toes in the warm grass.
Now take a moment to picture what you might be doing during the first full week of January.
Perhaps you'll be basking beneath the warm Hawaiian sun, taking a moment from reading a book or napping to apply more sun block. The sun is blazing away yet again and the puffy white clouds float by and yet there you are, the tension of the holidays oozing out of every pore. Home and reality seem months away.
There are two ways to make that imaginary picture come to life:
The first is to plunk down a bunch of cash and make the reservations and book the plane and rent the car and do all those millions of other things that come with a winter vacation.
The second is to win the PGA TOUR's new game for the FedExCup playoffs.
Care to guess which route The Fantasy Insider has in mind?
The inaugural playoff run is upon us and the best way for the TOUR and fanball.com to celebrate is with a game that's fall-off-the-edge-of-your-chair easy. All you need do is select four players, predict a handful of tiebreaker questions and then sit back and wait for the call that you've won.
And what a prize, girls and boys: First-class airfare to Hawaii, car rental and accommodations, a pro-am spot in the Sony Open in Hawaii and access to the first full-field tournament of the season. If you've never experienced Honolulu at that time of year -- not to mention a TOUR pro-am -- you can only imagine how green with envy your family and friends will become.
Oh, by the way, did TFI mention you get to take along a guest? Like, perhaps, your favorite fantasy golf columnist?
This game could not be any easier. In fact, it's so easy there's hardly any chance for TFI to screw it up in his predictions (which in no way should sway you from not taking him along for the vacation).
The playoffs cover four tournaments: The Barclays, the Deutsche Bank Championship, the BMW Championship and THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola. Before the run starts players will be seeded according to their FedExCup points. You pick four guys:
Pool One: Two players among those seeded first through 15th, those with the best chance of winning the $10 million annuity grand prize.
Pool Two: One player among those seeded 16th to 30th, those with a good shot of making all four events and capable of taking the whole thing if they do something insane like win two of the tournaments.
Pool Three: One player among those seeded 31st and higher, those with a chance of making all four tournaments if they perform consistently well in the first three.
Scoring is by FedExCup points awarded in the four events. In case of a tie -- and considering the number of people who will take the No. 1 guy there could be a pretty good chance of a tie -- the winner will be determined through the tie-breakers. They'll be simple questions like the shoe size of the BMW Championship winner or the favorite movie seen this year by the winner of the Deutsche Bank Championship.
The seedings were finalized Sunday at the end of the Wyndham Championship.
That's when you'll need to make your selections. There's no trading, no choosing a new lineup each week, no hassles. Take four names and wait for that call from HQ telling you when your flight leaves.
And in case you're wondering, TFI prefers the aisle seat. But if it's a problem he'll give you the aisle and sit by the window. He'll even carry your bag during the pro-am, happily raking every bunker you hit into.
After all, it's a heckuva lot better than shoveling in January, isn't it?
