Top 5 Movers: Wyndham Championship

Aug. 20, 2007

How crazy was the movement in the FedExCup standings after the Wyndham Championship? Perhaps the most important move -- by the winner of the tournament -- didn't even crack the list of the top five movers.

Brandt Snedeker's first PGA TOUR victory moved him 17 spots to ninth as the first tournament of the brand new PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup looms this week at The Barclays in Westchester.

Also left off the list is Andres Hansen, who moved up 14 spots to 137th and into the Playoffs after his T11 finish in Greensboro.

Let the battle begin.

Last Week: Wyndham Championship
This Week:
The Barclays

Biggest mover: Jeff Overton
He moved: 56 spots, from 140th to 79th
Because: He finished T2 at the Wyndham Championship
Overton's best career TOUR finish couldn't come at a better time, as it secured him a spot in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. Perhaps equally as impressive is that Overton made the field in just 11 events.

Overton's history at Westchester, albeit a brief one, is a successful one. He fnished T29 in his only appearance there in 2006. The effort included a second-round 65.

In the interest of full disclosure, Overton has played seven events on the Nationwide Tour this season. Ironically, he did not have a top-10 finish in the bunch. His best finish was a T13 at the Henrico County Open.

Welcome to the top 100: Tim Petrovic
He moved: 42 spots, from 124th to 82nd
Because: He finished T2 at the Wyndham Championship
Another player with exquiste timing, Petrovic earned his first top-10 finish of the season in Greensboro. He also has garnered six other top-25 finishes this season, including a 12th-place effort at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Petrovic's best finish at Westchester was a T28 run in 2004.

Incidentally, if things boil down to a putting contest during the Playoffs, Petrovic may have an edge. He's 15th on TOUR in putting average at 1.758. He's also 13th in birdies at 277.

Welcome to the top 50: Billy Mayfair
He moved: 35 spots, from 75th to 40th
Because: He finished T2 at the Wyndham Championship
Mayfair may be one to keep an eye on as these tournaments progress. He has three top-10 finishes in his past six starts, including his T2 finish at the Wyndham Championship. In that stretch, he's picked up 3,518 points, more than half of his season total.

Speaking of things to keep an eye on, Mayfair is 11th on TOUR in final round scoring average at 69.79. The Barclays has also been kind to Mayfair -- he fnished T7 there in 2005 after a final-round 66.

Welcome to the field: Shigeki Maruyama
He moved: 22 spots, from 162nd to 140th
Because: He finished T7 at the Wyndham Championship
More exceptional timing here, as Maruyama rides his best finish of the season right into the TOUR's postseason party. He was also T22 in the Canadian Open a few weeks back.

Maruyama's putting seems to be up to snuff -- he's seventh on TOUR in putts per round at 28.28. He also has interesting history at The Barclays -- he has two top-30 finishes in his past three events there.

Another strong move for: Kevin Stadler
He moved: 18 spots, from 123rd to 105th
Because: He finished T7 at the Wyndham Championship
Stadler appears to be peaking at the right time. His seventh-place finish at the Wyndham Championship is his second consecutive top-10 finish, following up his career-best TOUR effort at the Reno-Tahoe Open two weeks ago. In just those two events, Stadler has accumulated 1,853 points, more than half of his season total.

Stadler was also T13 at Cancun earlier this season.
