Carter's 10-under 130 put him two shots ahead of New Zealand's Steve Alker, Sweden's Alexander Noren and Joost Luiten of the Netherlands, as he chases his first Tour win since the Irish Open in 1998. That same year, he also claimed the World Cup alongside Nick Faldo in New Zealand.

"It's great to be leading, this is what we play the game for," Carter said. "Of course I'm going to be nervous tomorrow, but I'm nervous every time I play and that's a good thing."

Local favorite Luiten equaled the course record of 64.

"Six under today, which is always good, and lets see what I can do at the weekend," Luiten said.

Chris Riley was in a group at 5 under while former U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell of New Zealand shot 71 with birdies at the 13th and 18th.

Sweden's Henrik Nystrom and England's Sam Walker were three strokes behind Carter at 7 under par. First-round co-leader Jean-Baptiste Gonnet of France carded a 71 to be tied for eighth.
