U.S. Open: Final-round notebook

Jun. 17, 2007

Angel Cabrera fired rounds of 69-71-76-69 -- 285 score making him the first champion to win with a score 76 since Johnny Miller in the third round in 1973 at Oakmont Golf Club.

Cabrera earned 4,950 FedExCup points to move into 26th on the points list through 25 events, with 5,789 total points. Coming into the week, Carbrera was 155th. It is the second consecutive week that a player has moved from outside the 144 mark to inside the top-30.

Cabrera becomes the 14th player to record his first PGA TOUR victory at the U.S. Open going back to 1916, joining Michael Campbell (2005), Retief Goosen (2001), Ernie Els (1993), Jerry Pate (1976), Lee Trevino (1973), Orville Moody (1969), Jack Nicklaus (1962), Jack Fleck (1955), Julius Boros (1952), Sam Parks (1935), Johnny Goodman (1933), Bob Jones (1923).

Sunday was just the second time that Tiger Woods has played in the final pairing at a major championship, but did not hold at least a share of the lead through 54 holes. Earlier this year he was one-stroke back of playing partner Stuart Appleby at the Masters Tournament and was in the final grouping. In Augusta, Zach Johnson came from two-strokes back of Appleby to win by two-strokes over Rory Sabbatini, Retief Goosen and Woods. Woods has never won a Major Championship title in come-from-behind fashion; he is 0-29 at major championships. Below is a list of tournaments when Woods is five or less strokes back of the lead through 54 holes at a major championship.

Only seven other golfers have had at least five top-three finishes at the U.S. Open: Jack Nicklaus (9), Bobby Jones, Jr. (8), Ben Hogan (8), Gene Sarazen (7), Arnold Palmer (6), Sam Snead (5) and Julius Boros (5).

Tiger Woods collected 2,420 FedExCup points with his T2 finish and remains at the top of the FedExCup regular season points list. He has 3,706 points lead over Phil Mickelson who remains in second.

Jim Furyk, who tied Tiger Woods for second-place, finished in second for the second consecutive year at the U.S. Open. The last golfer to finish a Major in second place in consecutive years was Greg Norman at The Masters in 1986 and 1987. In the last 90 years of the U.S. Open, Furyk is the fourth golfer to finish in the runner-up spot in consecutive years: Bobby Jones (1924, 1925), Ben Hogan (1955, 1956) and Arnold Palmer (1962, 1963 and 1966, 1967).
