AT&T Classic: Round 1 Notebook AT&T Classic: Leaderboard | Number Crunch | Round 2 Tee Times Kevin Sutherland, who ranks 42nd on the FedExCup season-long points race, opened with a 7-under 65 and leads by two-strokes over Steve Marino, Craig Kanada, Bob May, Tommy Armour and Ryuji Imada at the AT&T Classic. Earlier this year, Sutherland posted a first round 7-under 65 at the Buick Invitational and heading into the final round at Torrey Pines was one-stroke back of leader Brandt Snedeker. Sutherland closed with a 2-over 74 to finish T14 in California. Sutherland, who has made nine cuts out of 12 starts, has had a solid year thanks to a runner-up finish to Phil Mickelson at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Kevin Sutherland holds the seventh first-round lead/co-lead of his PGA TOUR career. The last time he held a first-round lead was at the 2007 Shell Houston Open where he opened with a 6-under-par 66 and shared the lead with Stuart Appleby and Johnson Wagner. Sutherland was also tied for the lead after three rounds of the 2007 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Kevin Sutherland's two-stroke lead is the largest first-round lead since 1997, the first year the event was played at TPC Sugarloaf. In 1997, Don Pooley shot a 64 and led five players by two shots, including David Duval and Nick Price. Kevin Sutherland is making his 11th start at the AT&T Classic. His only top-10 finish came in 1997, when he finished T9. Larry Nelson (1988), Keith Fergus (1982), Hale Irwin (1975), Jack Nicklaus (1973) and Phil Mickelson (2006) are the only first-round leader/leaders in the 38-year history of the AT&T Classic to go on and win. Mickelson is the only leader to win after leading in the first round since the tournament moved to TPC Sugarloaf in 1997. Ryuji Imada eagled the final hole Thursday to jump into a tie for second place at 67. Imada needed only a 7-iron for his second shot on the 545-yard hole. He rolled in putt of 25 feet, 10 inches for his eagle. Imada's best finish of the season is a solo ninth at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship thanks to back-to-back 67s on the weekend. Imada finished T10 last year at the 2006 AT&T Classic, his best finish last year. Stewart Cink (70) and David Toms (71) both posted sub-par scores, which should come as no surprise. Cink now has shot below-par scores in 25 of his 35 rounds (71.43%) in this event and Toms has been below-par in 23 of his 32 rounds (71.87%). Five Georgia Tech and three University of Georgia alumni are in this week's field. Ryuji Imada shot a 67 to lead former Bulldogs Justin Bolli (72) and Franklin Langham (71). As for the Yellowjacket contingent, Stewart Cink (70), Troy Matteson (70) and Matt Kuchar (70) were in red numbers, while Bryce Molder (74) and Tripp Isenhour (78) failed to break par. Stephen Marino opened with a 5-under 67 on Thursday and is two-strokes back of leader Kevin Sutherland. Last week, the rookie was the last player to earn a spot in the field at THE PLAYERS Championship. He replaced Dudley Hart on Thursday morning. Marino was among a record-high seven rookie to qualify last week in Ponte Vedra Beach. In his fifth start of the season, he finished eighth at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, after recording four rounds in the 60s. He earned his biggest payday of his career with his T10 finish at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship. There were four bogey-free rounds posted on Thursday at the TPC Sugarloaf. Jeff Gove managed to hit all 18 greens in regulation on Thursday...Kenny Perry (71), Daisuke Maruyama (71), Chris Riley (75) and Glenn Day (72) were all 14 of 14 in fairways hit...Joe Ogilvie needed only 22 putts to get around TPC Sugarloaf. Dicky Pride opened with a 4-under 68 and is tied for seventh. The last time he finished in the top-10 in a TOUR event was last year at the U.S. Bank Championship (T9). John Daly withdrew after the round with a shoulder injury. Charley Hoffman recorded five birdies on Thursday bringing his total birdie count for the season to 179, which would rank fifth on the year-to-date list, one birdie behind Phil Mickelson who has 180 birdies for the season. Vijay Singh leads the category with 197 total birdies.
