The Gators rule -- again

Apr. 3, 2007

It's great to be a Florida Gator. Again.

And it's great to be Doug LaBelle, Camilo Villegas and Charles Warren, who each correctly picked Florida to beat Ohio State for the National Championship in the PGATOUR.com bracket contest.

WHO THEY PICKED

Villegas is in the best of both worlds, as he's a recent University of Florida graduate and ended up as one of the top three in our competition. Unfortunately for him, Villegas graduated in 2004 and wasn't a student during Florida's impressive run, as they have now won the 2006 NCAA Men's Basketball championship, the 2006 NCAA Men's Football title and repeated with the same starting five in the 2007 basketball tournament.

While Villegas went with his alma mater and his heart by picking the Gators, former Clemson Tiger Warren and University of New Mexico grad LaBelle chose the talented Florida team to top the Ohio State Buckeyes -- just as they had done when the two teams met earlier in the season -- in the battle of the tournament No. 1 seeds.

Johnson Wagner, however, thought the Buckeyes stood a chance, selecting them to top Florida in the final game. Troy Matteson had Florida losing in the National Championship battle as well, though to North Carolina. Zach Johnson thought Kansas and Georgetown would meet in the finals after beating Florida and Ohio State, respectively. Nick Watney chose Ohio State to lose in the final game, but to the Kansas Jayhawks. not the Florida Gators.

The rest of the PGA TOUR player experts didn't see another match-up of Florida vs. Ohio State, who also played for the football national title earlier this year, or even those two teams to make it into the Final Four.

As usual, the tournament offered plenty of surprises, but in the end it was LaBelle, Villegas and Warren who proved adept at predicting the final result.
