Blog: Slocum hopes to play his way into the Masters Special to PGATOUR.com Editor's note: Heath Slocum finished second last week at the PODS Championship, one of three top-10 finishes he's had in his first six starts this season. He's writing a blog for PGATOUR.com this year, and this is his second installment. ORLANDO, Fla. -- Wow ... what a week! Sunday started with hopes of picking up my third PGA TOUR win at the PODS Championship in Tampa. It was just seven days before that I watched my high school teammate Boo Weekley have a chance to win at The Honda Classic. I played very well all week, but came up a little short when I had a chance to force a playoff with Mark Calcavecchia as I missed my putt on the 72nd hole. ![]() Heath Slocum believes the field will play well this week at Bay Hill. (Fred Vuich/WireImage) The hardest part about missing the putt is that on TOUR we don't get that many opportunities to win and you would like to capitalize on the chances that you get. It was a great experience, though, as I got to play in the last group both on Saturday and Sunday. I am ready for my next chance and know that this experience will help me when it comes. This week I'm at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard in Orlando. I was able to have a great day with my girlfriend on Monday and relax after Sunday's events. I can't even explain what an honor it is to play in Mr. Palmer's tournament. He is such a legend in our sport and puts on a first-class event at a great golf course every year. I hope to pick up where I left off last week and really use what I worked on with my coach Mark Blackburn that allowed me to play great at the PODS Championship. The course seems to be in great shape and I look for the field to play very well this week so I have to make sure I get off to a great start on Thursday and Friday.
With a good tournament this week, I have a chance to play my way into the World Golf Championships-CA Championship at Doral next week in Miami. I really want to make that event because with a couple of good weeks, I could get a chance to play in the Masters. The Masters has been a goal of mine since I first started playing golf and to be so close has me really excited to play each week. If for some reason I don't get in, I'll go back home to Atlanta and take a few weeks off to get ready for the upcoming tournaments in my schedule. In all, it has been a crazy couple of weeks, but I feel like my game is in a good spot and it feels good to tee it up each week. |
