Kerr continues to help raise breast cancer awareness SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Cristie Kerr, recipient of the 2006 LPGA Komen Award, continued her efforts to raise awareness and fund breast cancer research as host of the Cristie Kerr Birdies for Breast Cancer Charity Poker Night at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North. The evening realized $140,000 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the research center at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. "It was a perfect night," said Kerr, who opened her competitive golf season Thursday at the ANZ Ladies Masters in Australia. "It was a blessing to have the support of so many friends patrons and to get such a warm reception in Scottsdale after living here for such a short period of time. We look forward to making it an annual event in the Valley for a great and important cause." More than 200 guests played Texas Hold 'em at the Charity Poker Night, which was underwritten by Northern Trust. Among the celebrities in attendance were LPGA star Natalie Gulbis, Arizona Diamondbacks and FOX Sports broadcaster Thom Brenneman and Los Angeles Dodgers leftfielder Luis Gonzalez. Memorabilia was auctioned and attendees pledged to match Cristie's ongoing contribution of $50 for every birdie and eagle she makes on the LPGA Tour. Fans can join in that effort by clicking on Cristie's Birdies for Breast Cancer website, www.birdiesforbreastcancer.com. Including this event, Kerr has raised nearly $400,000 in the three years since the charity was started. |
