Goydos jumps to second in latest FedExCup standings For several months now, Paul Goydos has been hearing about the "new era in golf" that is the FedExCup. Goydos just didn't realize the catch phrase for the PGA TOUR's revolutionary new points system could refer to him as well. The 42-year-old TOUR veteran won for the first time in 246 events and nearly 11 years when he birdied the 72nd hole to beat Charles Howell III and Luke Donald at the Sony Open in Hawaii on Sunday. The victory was the second of Goydos' 15-year PGA Tour career. ![]() (WireImage)
As an added bonus, the win at Waialae Country Club vaulted Goydos to second in the FedExCup standings two weeks into the season. Goydos trails Vijay Singh, who won the season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship and tied for 34th on Sunday, by 121 points. Singh leads the standings with 4,621 points. Goydos, playing in his season-opener, won 4,500 points for his come-from-behind victory at Waialae. "It's been a work in progress, let's go with that," Goydos said of his career. "But yeah, I think that this is a new era, that's what the TOUR keeps telling us, and the FedExCup is exciting. It's going to bring hopefully more viewers to the game and hopefully be able to get out in the forefront and have a good week right out of the box, and win one of the first events, that's part of what's going to sink in over the next few days. "It's a pretty big deal. First full field event in the FedExCup, that's pretty cool." Luke Donald, who tied for second with Howell, moved from seventh into third in the FedExCup standings with 3,038 points. Meanwhile, Adam Scott, who opted not to play in the Sony Open, dropped from second to fourth. Howell accumulated his first FedExCup points of the year, earning 2,200 for his tie for second at Waialae. He jumped past Trevor Immelman, who was third last week but tied for 34th in the Sony Open. K.J. Choi, who, like Donald, has two top-10 finishes already this year, is seventh in the standings with 1,709 points. Jim Furyk and Geoff Ogilvy were the two biggest gainers among players who have competed each of the first two weeks. Furyk moved from 18th to eighth with his tie for fourth at Waialae while Ogilvy jumped seven spots to 12th. All players who made the cut at the Sony Open received FedExCup points this week. |
