Editor's note: David Toms, who will defend his title at the Sony Open in Hawaii next week, is one of several players who will be writing a monthly blog for PGATOUR.com this year. Here is his first installment.

KAPALUA, Hawaii -- Someone asked me how I got my game ready for 2007. Well, when I got here, it was essentially my first preparation for the season. I really haven't played any golf at all, and it has kind of shown so far this week. I made an equipment change to TaylorMade during the offseason, and that has been a very positive move for me. I really like the clubs and that part is going well. But I'm rusty. I just need to put in the time on the range and the putting green. It's been fun to be here so far, but it's difficult to play in conditions like this when you haven't played any golf. So a bunch of bad habits form. It's been windy, which kind of magnifies any problems you might have. But I'll get the kinks worked out.

I got here on Sunday afternoon. I didn't come over any earlier because I wanted to stay home with my family until the last minute. My wife ended up coming over here and surprising me, which was great. We watched the Sugar Bowl together in the hotel room. I usually do better watching LSU games by myself. If I make a fool out of myself then it's better I'm alone because I don't like comments from anybody else. I just want to be there watching it. It was so much fun. We played a great game, and it was good beating a team like Notre Dame that has a lot of history. Plus, it was the only bowl game that day, so the whole world was watching.

I was nervous going into the game and during the first half a little bit. But I saw the way we were moving the ball, and I felt good going into the second half. It turned out pretty nice, didn't it? I probably had 10 text messages from friends of mine during the game. If people call me I try not to answer the phone because I want to focus on the game but I'll look at the text messages. I just don't want to get hung up in a conversation and miss a play. I'm kind of a crazy fan, I guess. I don't make as many of LSU's basketball games, because springtime is tough and we're playing a lot of golf. But I definitely watch as many as I can on TV. I think we'll be solid. We lost a few players last year but we'll be good. For now, though, I want to savor that 41-14 victory over Notre Dame a little longer.
