Nationwide Tour Graduate Q&A: Roland Thatcher Nationwide Tour Graduate Q&A archive Editor's Note: Roland Thatcher enjoyed an amazing year in 2007, scoring two wins and leading the money list for much of the second half of the season. Thatcher sat down recently with PGATOUR.com's Dave Lagarde for a game of 10 questions. 1. If the PGA TOUR allows music on the first tee, what song will be used to introduce you? ![]()
Thatcher: Everything by Led Zeppelin, but if I have to choose one, make it "Gallows Pole." 2. You have the power to alter any rule in the game of golf. What is it and why do you want to change it? Thatcher: At this level there is no way a player should be disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. I understand we are responsible, but there are enough ways to correct a clerical error. 3. What was your most embarrassing moment on a golf course? Thatcher: At Q-School at Bear Lakes a few years ago, I hit one on the roof of the clubhouse on the last hole when I needed a par. I had to ask a member of the grounds crew if he could go up and check for me. We couldn't find it. I had to drop in a pampas bush and made triple. 4. Who would you most like to hit balls next to next year, and why? Thatcher: I've been fortunate enough to hit balls next to Tiger when I was out there. It's hard not to say him. 5. Do you have any oddball superstitions? If not, what's the strangest one you've heard of? Thatcher: Well I don't know if this qualifies, but I haven't cut my hair since the season started. 6. When your putt rolls in to win your first PGA TOUR title, will you go with the Tiger fist pump, the Mickelson mini-vertical jump or something a little crazier? Thatcher: It won't be a leap or a fist pump. I'm much more demonstrative when I'm visibly upset. So I think I'll just say, 'Thank you.' But I guarantee you I'll be elated on the inside. 7. Other than winning a tournament, what would make next year a success? Thatcher: Keeping my card. 8. You've been granted a 60-minute sit-down with any figure in the world of golf, living or dead. What's your first question and to whom would you address it? Thatcher: I'd love to pick Ben Hogan's brain. To me he has a mythical quality like Ted Williams in baseball. I'd like to know how he viewed his career and what spurred him on to comeback after his accident. 9. What is your wildest golf dream? Thatcher: I don't think about golf when I'm off the course. And I certainly don't dream about it. I can't remember the last dream I had. 10. What is the most valuable lesson about your profession you learned on the Nationwide Tour? Thatcher: We have so few people who watch us out here in comparison to the PGA TOUR. That makes me really appreciate the people who do show up. So I've learned to try my best to be supportive of them and honor my profession and the tour. |
