NFL placekicker caddied for Jeff Klauk this week

During his National Football League career, placekicker Jeff Chandler has played on a number of teams, including most recently the Washington Redskins. He had a distinguished career at the University of Florida, and played on then-head coach Steve Spurrier's last Gator team. PGA TOUR media official John Bush had the opportunity of sitting down with Chandler for another edition of "Say What" at this week's Nationwide Tour stop at the South Georgia Classic. Chandler is in town serving as a caddy for his friend and Nationwide Tour member Jeff Klauk.

Q: Tell us about your friendship with Jeff Klauk?

Chandler: We are both from Jacksonville and have some of the same friends. We started playing some golf together and have been friends ever since.

Q: How would Jeff do as a football player?

Chandler: He would be awful. I don't think he is tough enough physically for it. But he has the right mindset.

Q: How would you be as a professional golfer?

Chandler: I'd be about as good as Jeff would be at football.

Q: What was your favorite football team growing up?

Chandler: I was a big Dallas Cowboys fan, mainly because of former Gator Emmitt Smith.

Q: What is your favorite sport other than football?

Chandler: The question should probably be what is my favorite sport other than golf.

Q: Who is your favorite athlete of all time?

Chandler: Pete Sampras. He was the ultimate professional.

Who is your favorite golfer?

Chandler: Jeff Klauk, of course.

Q: Aside from the obvious, what is the biggest difference between football and golf?

Chandler: Noise ... in football the goal is for the stadium to be as loud as possible. In golf, you want it to be as quiet as possible. But other than that, the pressure is the same in both sports.

Q: What is your favorite stadium to kick in?

Chandler: The Swamp, without a doubt. It is the best stadium I've ever played in professionally or collegiately. It's the loudest too, because the fans are right on top of you. Not to mention, I love all of that orange paint.

Q: Why do younger kickers seem to struggle with extra points these days?

Chandler: I think they take them for granted. I've fallen victim to that at times during my career. I relate it to two-foot putts in golf. You tend to not practice those as much as the longer ones.

Q: What was the best kick of your life?

Chandler: In 2000, I made a 54-yarder in the third quarter against Georgia to break a 17-17 tie. We went on to win by 11 points. Kicking that field goal to beat our rival in my hometown of Jacksonville, it doesn't get any better than that.

Q: Any funny or strange moments stick out during your career?

Chandler: Playing for the 49ers, I was at the game in Seattle when Terrell Owens pulled a Sharpie out of his sock and signed the football after scoring a touchdown. We all looked at each other and thought, "What just happened?"

Q: Do you have a favorite pre-game meal?

Macaroni and cheese, chicken and a little side salad.

Q: Any pre-game rituals?

Chandler: For the most part, I don't consider myself superstitious. But I do wear the same pair of socks on the same feet for each game. One is labeled "R" and the other is labeled "L". So you be the judge.

Q; What is your favorite golf course?

Chandler: THE PLAYERS Stadium Course. Growing up in Jacksonville and having attended the tournament for many years, I consider it the ultimate golf course.

Q: Tell us about your first experience playing the famed 17th hole?

Chandler: Hit the first ball in the water, which I tell people was just a practice shot. The second shot landed on the green.

Q: What is your career best score?

Chandler: I shot a 74 at a Jacksonville Beach municipal course.

Q: Do you have a favorite movie?

Chandler: Caddyshack. I still laugh every time I see the scene when Rodney Dangerfield pulls up and says "Hey Wang, c'mon. It's a parking lot."
