FedExCup Watch: AT&T National

Jul. 4, 2007

• There are seven weeks remaining in the regular season.

• Eighteen players in the Top 30 are in the field, including "bubble boy" Mark Wilson. Without at least one more top-five this season, he could easily drop another 10 to 15 spots this season, seriously damaging his chance to win the FedExCup, or even make it to The TOUR Championship.

• An impressive 81 of the players ranked from 31st to 144th are in the field (72 percent), and each of them has a chance to get into the Top 30 with a win. Of those 81, 17 won an event last year.

• An equally impressive 37 players have a chance to move into the top 15 in this event, which would not only position them well for the playoffs if they could maintain that position, but would virtually assure them at least a Top 30 seed going in. Twelve of them have won this year or last.

• Both Mickelson and Singh have a chance to overtake Woods with a victory, although Woods would stay in front if he finishes seventh or better no matter what the others do. Woods is likely to play four events between now and the playoffs -- a victory in any of them would make him a prohibitive favorite to be the top seed going into the Playoffs unless Singh or Mickelson pick up multiple victories in the three or four other events they're likely to play.

• Once again, Jim Furyk is the highest-ranked player in the FedExCup standings still seeking his first victory in 2007. He moved up a spot in the standings with his T5 finish at the Buick Open, his fifth top-five of the year. (He has also extended his streak to 37 consecutive rounds under par at the Buick Open.) Geoff Ogilvy is also quietly having a good year, which could turn into a great one with a victory. Currently 19th in the standings, he has a second, a third and two other top-10s. With a victory, he'd move comfortably inside the top 10, to sixth.

• This week, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh join Tiger Woods as the only players to have clinched a spot in the Top 30. The gap between third and fourth is large enough that Zach Johnson, in fourth, has clinched only a spot in the Top 42. Only a win would lock in his Top 30 spot.
