Player Blog: Toms on the Presidents Cup

Oct. 3, 2007

Editor's note: David Toms was the leading point-getter for the U.S. in its 19 1/2 to 14 1/2 victory over the Internationals at The Presidents Cup last week. Toms won four matches and earned a halve in the other for a total of 4 1/2 points. He shares his experiences in this blog.

I just got back home after spending a week in Canada competing in The Presidents Cup. Our team got off to a quick start on Thursday and never trailed in the event. I love playing for my country and I love playing in team events.

The main question I get is why does the U.S. team perform so much better in The Presidents Cup than in the Ryder Cup. I don't really have a good answer for that. Golf is a funny game. The team that putts better almost always wins, and our team was making all kinds of putts last week.

On the first hole in the first match, Hunter Mahan rolled in a birdie to take the lead. On the first hole in the second match, Woody Austin rolled in a long birdie to take the lead. We got early momentum and never looked back.

I played pretty well and was fortunate to earn 4 ½ points. I was paired with Jim Furyk, Austin, Zach Johnson and Tiger Woods during the week. Some of you may not realize that I was paired with Woody when he took his now infamous dive in the water on the 14th hole.

Even though that makes for a great highlight, it kind of overshadowed his great play down the stretch. Woody birdied Nos. 16, 17 and 18 and played some outstanding golf, even though he was wet.

I've been on six international team competitions with Tiger, but I have never been paired with him. I've been in the same pairing many times with Tiger on the TOUR, but we were both glad we finally got put together.

I'm taking a break from the PGA TOUR for a while, but that doesn't mean I won't be busy. I have a few corporate outing commitments to take care of in the next few weeks. In a few days I will be at Baton Rouge Country Club with Rees Jones. Rees and I worked together on the re-design of the course and we will be having the official grand re-opening.

On Saturday, LSU will play one of the biggest games in Tiger Stadium history as we host the Florida Gators. LSU is now ranked No. 1, but a win over the Gators is never a guarantee. It doesn't get any easier after we play Florida. LSU travels to face top-10 Kentucky, followed by games again Auburn, Alabama and Arkansas.

I will also be spending some of my free time hunting. I'm taking a trip with my dad and my son up to North Dakota to hunt geese, duck and pheasant. I am looking forward to having a great time.

I also have a few golf course design projects in the works. Since my last email update, we have finished the golf course design page on our website.
