David Toms' blog: Any player could take the cup

Aug. 23, 2007

Editor's note: David Toms has seven top-10 finishes and more than $2 million in earnings in 2007 thanks to another consistent season on the PGA TOUR. He enters the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup ranked 25th, as a result. Toms took time out from his preparations for The Barclays to file another blog.

HARRISON, N.Y. -- I'm in New York getting ready for the start of the FedExCup. This is a different environment this week. Not only is it 40 degrees cooler than my hometown (that is not an exaggeration - yesterday the high temperature was 59 degrees) but everyone is talking about our new playoffs.

No one really knows how it could play out. The winner of this week's event gets 9,000 FedExCup points. Any golfer in the top 60 who wins this week will take the lead and could be on his way to a $10 million prize.

In 2001, the Seattle Mariners won 116 games but didn't even make it to the World Series. The winner of the FedEx Cup is not necessarily going to be the best player of 2007. Tiger, with his incredible year of five wins and another major championship, is the Player of the Year regardless of what he does in the last few tournaments.

The FedExCup was designed to create a lot of excitement down the stretch, and I think that goal is being accomplished. I'm not sure that it is a perfect system, but it certainly is creating some anticipation. This is the first year, and if the playoffs need tweaking, it can be done before next season.

I'm playing Thursday morning with Luke Donald and Geoff Ogilvy. They are both great guys and great players. I've played decently at Westchester Country Club through the years. Some of my recent finishes were 15th , 18th and 12th .

I will be on the road for four straight weeks. I'm planning on playing the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston, the BMW Championship in Chicago and THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola in Atlanta.

I will miss the first three LSU football games, but two of them will be on TV. The Tigers kick off the college football season next Thursday night against Mississippi State on ESPN. I can hardly wait.

I was in Baton Rouge, La., last week and was able to stop by and watch the team practice. They looked great, and I think Coach Miles has them in fantastic shape.
