| Player Blog: Brandt Snedeker Special to PGATOUR.com Editor's note: Brandt Snedeker, who will be writing a blog periodically for PGATOUR.com, won his first PGA TOUR event on Sunday at the Wyndham Championship and moved from 26th to ninth on the FedExCup points list. On the eve of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, Snedeker took some time to reflect on what the last 48 hours have been like. HARRISON, N.Y. -- I'm still smiling ear to ear. It hasn't really sunk in yet. I am just trying to get back to reality, trying to focus in on this week because I realize how very important the four weeks of the Playoffs coming up are. ![]() Brandt Snedeker fired a 63 in the final round to win the Wyndham Championship by a shot. (Getty Images) There will be time to celebrate after that and really enjoy the win. I took yesterday off just to kind of get away from everything and get some sleep and relax. I wanted to try to get a little work done today and get back into my routine, but the rain is making that difficult. So I'll have to hit it hard again tomorrow. It was kind of a whirlwind Sunday night after I won. The CEO of Wyndham was flying back here to New York, and he was kind enough to hold his plane for me and my caddie. We even had a police escort to the airport. All of a sudden, there I was in a police car -- for a good thing, of course -- so that was pretty unbelievable. It just all happened so quickly. We were on that plane so fast and got up here so quick and it didn't really have time to sink in. I barely got a chance to talk to my parents and my girlfriend back home. Everybody was still in tears, just hooting and hollering, and being, you know, yahoos, like they tend to be. So it was definitely fun, but nothing crazy. I didn't really celebrate or anything. I just went to bed early. I didn't realize how tired I was. I got up here around 9 o'clock and was in bed by 9:30. It was definitely an exhausting day -- but the kind of day I could get used to. I've had over 100 text messages, too, and my voice mail has been full for two days. Probably everybody is mad at me because I haven't been able to get back to them yet, but I'm trying my best to respond because it is important for me to make sure they realize how much I appreciate their support. It's really touching when you realize you have so many people who care about you and love seeing you do well. I can't believe the outpouring I got from everybody back in Nashville, either. It's the first time we've had a player win on TOUR in a long time. I think Lou Graham was probably the last one. So there's been an unbelievable outpouring of support from there, too, and it feels great to give them something to root for back on the golf course again.
I splurged on a nice bottle of wine last night, but that will probably be about it for now. I'm not going to buy a new car or anything like that. I don't have a garage, so I'm not going to buy something nice and let it sit outside in the rain. I guess I'm cheap when it comes to that kind of stuff. I don't mind spending money on other people but I hate spending on myself. So my family will probably get some good Christmas gifts this year. That will be fun. Like I said, I took Monday off. I tried to go into the city and found out why New Yorkers don't have cars. There's an awful lot of traffic here. I was stuck in traffic for a good hour and a half trying to get downtown. I eventually gave up, turned around, came home, had some lunch and went shopping up here in Westchester. Then we had a nice dinner last night at Morton's. So my caddie and I finally got to celebrate and it was nice. I am going to try and go into the city again tomorrow afternoon. I like to walk around and see New York. I've been there a couple of times now, and I'm amazed by all the people. I love seeing Chinatown and Little Italy and doing all that fun stuff. All of those lights and all the people just throw me for a loop, but it's fun. It's something you have to do every time you get a chance to come up here. I'm taking a train this time, though. I learned my lesson. I've also got a job to do here. I have to try to get back to what I did last week. Today, with the rain, it's kind of a scratch day. I might go out and hit a few putts, but I am probably not going to see the golf course until tomorrow when I play in the pro-am. Luckily, though, I've developed a good practice routine.
I can't lose focus on what got me here. I really need to try to get back into that. It's tough, you know, with all of the stuff going on this week, and my mind being elsewhere, thinking about all of the great perks I get from winning. But it's back to reality with four huge tournaments in a row, so I have to my focus back. I hope I can ride the momentum of last week here at The Barclays. When I get hot like that, I tend to get hot for a while. Fall is my best time of year to play golf and we are getting into that late summer and fall area. So, hopefully, I can keep riding a hot putter and make some good swings, and I can make the best of the next four weeks. You have to focus on each tournament. I'll look at the FedExCup standings each Sunday night after we get done so I'll have an idea where we are and what we need to do. But you can't think about the FedExCup during the tournament because it will just eat at you and get you thinking about the wrong stuff. You've really got to focus on what you're doing, which is trying to win a golf tournament and trying to put yourself in position on Sunday. I may not do a great job at that, but I'll try, and more than anything else, I want to have fun and enjoy it. This is my first time going into the Playoffs, so hopefully I get to experience three of them or hopefully all four of them, so it will be fun. To win the FedExCup would mean everything to me. More than anything else, I want to validate this victory that I had last week and make sure that people realize that it wasn't a fluke and that I did deserve it. And more than anything, I want to validate it to myself, make sure that I can prove to myself that it wasn't a fluke. If I can do that and play well these four weeks, that would be extra special. It would obviously be the highlight of my life and something I'm shooting for. |
