Q&A: Kresge on camaraderie, his first check and tunes

Dec. 28, 2006

Cliff Kresge had eight top-10 finishes and 14 top-25 finishes on the 2006 Nationwide Tour. Thanks to his strong performance, Kresge will be playing on the PGA TOUR in 2007. He spoke to PGATOUR.com for this Q&A.

PGATOUR.com: Tell me three things not related to golf that you consider must-dos before you're on the wrong side of the divot?
Kresge: "Be a good dad and see my son graduate from college. I've always wanted to visit South Africa. And I'd love to win the lottery.''

PGATOUR.com: What is your wildest golf dream?
Kresge: "Winning the Masters by beating Tiger Woods down the stretch.''

PGATOUR.com: What aspect of the Nationwide Tour will you miss most next season?
Kresge: "The camaraderie out there is unbelievable. It seems like everyone is close and the relationships are genuine. I know it's not like that on the PGA TOUR, but you have to consider most of those guys have been out there for a long time and it is hard for a Nationwide Tour grad or someone from Q-School to break into the inner circle.''

PGATOUR.com: What was your welcome-to-professional-golf moment?
Kresge: "Making my first check on the Tommy Armour Tour. That was quite memorable. I still have a copy of the check.''

PGATOUR.com: You've been granted a 60-minute sit-down with any figure in the world of golf, living or dead. What's your first question -- and to whom would you address it?
Kresge: "It would be Bobby Jones. I'm not sure about a specific question but I'd really like to pick his brain and ask him about his thought processes on the golf course. And I'd really like to hear him compare today's game to the one played in his era.''

PGATOUR.com: Describe the menu, from soup to nuts, of your next title celebration dinner. And name the wine pairings.
Kresge: "Start with a Caesar salad. Then I'd have a filet or a ribeye steak with garlic mashed potatoes and French-cut green beans. I had a real nice Pinot Noir from Oregon to go with it. And then I have a warm brownie with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce on top.''

PGATOUR.com: Name five songs in your iPod.
Kresge:
What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong
The Drive by Garth Brooks
God Bless the Broken Road by Rascal Flatts
In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel
She's a Beauty by The Tubes'

PGATOUR.com: Other than winning a tournament, what would make next year a success?
Kresge: "Well maintaining my card for sure, but if you really want to know I want to make it to the finals of the FedExCup.''

PGATOUR.com: The first time you're paired with Tiger, what would you say to break the ice?
Kresge: "Well I've played with Tiger twice in the last two rounds in the final group at the Western Open. We had a ball, talked about girls, his commercials. (Laughing) And I'd probably ask him what's happened to his game.''

PGATOUR.com: Who would you most like to hit balls next to, and why?
Kresge: "I'll give you four: Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.''
